Default Demand

Any comments on the fact that the 93 Ruby option outsold virtually every other "special option" Corvette ever offered and it did it in
ONE YEAR of production !!!!!
I agree horsepower and rarity are very important, but you can't beat POPULARITY to bring in the buyers.
For example
THE 88 35th anniversary sold only 9% of total production.
The 96 CE sold 25% of total production.
The 93 Ruby Z25 sold 31% of total production !!!
They couldn't build em fast enough to satisfy the demand.
O.K. I am biased
My personal opinion is the ZR-1 engine scares a LOT of buyers away.
I know it's proven it's durability but just thinkin bout all those cams n valves scares me!!!!

I think another consideration is coupe vs. vert. In general verts always hold their value and bring more money than their equivalent coupe version. Of course this does not apply to special performance models like L88's, ZR-1's and Z06's since they were (mostly) coupe only models (I think there may have been a few vert L88's in existence). There are a few other rare exceptions such as the '63 split-window.

The '63 coupe also points out how the market can be fickle. At the time, vette buyers hated this coupe due its poor rear-view visibility so GM changed it the very next year. No one thought about the fact that this would make for a very rare car and thus collectible 30 years down the road. But it's nearly impossible to predict what unpopular odd-***** will turn into investment gold 25 years from now. If it were that easy, we would all rush out to purchase a Telsa Coupe!

Having been L-88 convert owner and current Callaway twin-turbo convert owner can say it matters even with high horse! Z06 and ZR-1 are examples where this is not a choice! JMO

April's Magazine Corvette (or is Corvette Magazine?) has a good write up. ZR1's don't appear to be going anywhere. The '96 Gran Sport seems to be the best - you might pick it up; interesting read and includes a good layout on the history of the C4.

Default Gran Sport

Gran Sport's are interesting in that they couldn't move them in 96.
People generally didn't like the color combo (weird).
All of a sudden it became common knowledge that only 1,000 were built
and all hell broke loose.(pure collector value)not generally popular.
They may rocket into the mega dollar range ???
Can you build and market a collectors' item ????
I maintain they will peak and then fall off in price.
It's just my opinion but a Corvette has to look good too,and this car in I think most people's opinion is garish with a strange color combo that is not as appealing as a CE or really many other C-4 color combinations.
It does have some heritage but it's a re-make of a true collectible.

Put it this way, if they'd built 5,000 they wouldn't be collectible and I don't think they'd be popular either.
My $00.02

I'm partial to the Grand Sports. But, I purchased mine way before the feeding frenzy started on them. I just liked the looks of the car and bought because of that.

I also think the '93 Ruby ZR-1 will hold its own over time. One thing for sure...time will tell what will be collectible.

All the autocrossers love them. Last year for the dash, 89 had all the good upgrades. 1st yr for the ZF they got the black tag, quick ratio steering, stiff suspension, etc. Had my eye on one or two here lately, just dont have the coin right now.

one thing, you refer to "black tag", what is this?

btw - when i placed my order for 89, i got all upgrades with one exception, low tire pressure warning. i should have just gotten that too...
