I will start by saying I am NOT having a problem with my pump. But, there is always a catch isn't there, I am going to drive from the KC area to Dallas and back next weekend. The fuel pump is the one that was in the car in 1999 when I bought it. Never having experienced a fuel pump failure I don't know what to look for if it is starting to go bad. I have figured out that I will not get an email that my pump is going out in two weeks but that I may be driving along and the car decides it is not going to run any longer.
What I am thinking of doing is buying a replacement pump and taking it and the tools needed to change it with me on the trip. There are areas that I drive thru that you can go over 30 miles and no towns of any kind. And a lot of the ones I drive thru the parts store is Mom & Pop and I would be suprised if they stocked the pump.
So what do all of you think about this? Other than the pump being old I have absolutely no concerns about the trip. The few problems I have had are pretty much taken care of and the car does seem to run OK.
Sounds like you're getting paranoid a little. The FP is available at most autoparts stores and is easy to do. I think it is a 10mm bolt (as a lot are on these cars) take em out pull lit up replace and you're done about 30min max. Have a nice drive.
Hook a pressure gauge to the fuel line and test the pressure at the fuel rail. If you don't have the proper tools for this, take it somewhere and have it tested. That will tell you if the fuel pump is still putting out within the acceptable level. That should put your mind at ease. Alot of the time they will peter out slowly but surely.
I have the pressure guage and it does show 43 lbs. I am only concerned since only have 4 days to get home to see the kids and don't want to have a problem. If it is a slow progression of going out then no problem.
My problem is identical to yours. After 141K miles mine was still apparently ok but as a precautionary decided to change it. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy 'bout your ride. After the new eng and ZF tranny hopefully this is the last weak length.
