Default I've tried everything..

I can think of to polish the outside of these exhaust tips and have had no luck. I have tried, never- dull, aluminum polish, silver polish, ect.. Is there a heavy duty solvent that I can use to break down this heavy baked on residue?

Thanks!

Have you tried #0000 steel wool? If this is surface reside, steel wool should cut it off.

Really hate to say this but from your pics, it would appear the the chrome had delaminated on the end of the tips and what you are trying to polish is the nickle base. Sometimes when a mfg uses a process called flash plating, the parts aren't cleaned properly before the final layer of chrome is applied. After some time being exposed to heat/cool cycles the chrome actually starts to flake off, exposing the nickle layer underneath which turns dark because of the heat. Not much you can do put replace or rechrome the tips.

Thanks for the diagnosis. I was afraid it was something like that. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get them re-chromed, and if I can run the car with the tips off?(while I wait for them to get back)
