Default Another C-4 wheel/question

New member probably an old question. I am looking at the AFS black chrome ZR1 wheels for my two tone silver 86. Either the 17x 11 in back with 17x9.5 up front or 17 x 9.5 all the way around. I am leaning towards the look of the wider set in the back. This car will only see about 5k miles a year. I could either buy one of thier wheel/tire packages ( seem reasonably priced? ) or get the wheels and choose a different tire that may provide better traction. Moslty she will see easy use with occassional spirited driving.

Will all brands size 315/35ZR17 have adequate clearance on a stock set up? Do you think the ride quality is much worse with the wider set-up? Handling wise is one set up better than the other? Right now it stock horsepower but that could change over the years. Not really concerned with the ability to rotate. What a great site and thanks for humoring a newbie!

Thanks

IMHO, the biggest problem with the 315/35 rear tire is that very few companies still make them. And if you want a really grippy tire, the choices are even less. Go to the Tire Rack website and use the tire size locater feature; plug in 315/35-17 and see what comes up.

The 315 tire in the rear wheelwell may stick out just a small amount. Most 315 tires ave very close in terms of section width and tread width.

The AFS wheel sets with 11" rear wheels use the Sumitomo HTRZ tire. You might want to use the search function to get some info about those tires. Some people like them, some don't. In any event, if Sumitomo or Goodyear quits making that size, the 11 wide rear wheels won't do a lot of good a few years from now.

And tires will dry out with age and low use. Five years is about all you can really expect from a high-performance tire before the compunds dry out and you may even see some cracking in the tread or sidewall.

Personally, I would go with 9.5" wheels at all 4 corners and maybe run a 285/40 in the back if you don't care about rotating tires. That size was standard on C4's beginning in 1994 on base suspension cars.

A 275/40 tire is widely available in a number of brands and performance levels. Having a large rear tire bith stock suspension will give the car some understeer where it would not have existed before.

Default Tires

Thanks I appreciate the input. I know my dad always had a problem keeping the tires balanced, any advice there?
