Default Intermitten adjustments on auto temp controls

I switch back and forth from using the AC to having the top off and just using the fresh air venting. Sometimes the temp or the fam controls will either not work or will only adjust in one direction, either up or down and usually not the direction I want. Is this a sign that the auto control unit is going out or is it just contacts? If it is just contacts, what is needed to clean/adjust them?

Thanks Mike. That's exactly what I was looking for. Now I have a starting point. Will let you know how it comes out when I get it finished.

I've done the R&R on my climate control unit twice now. It's not a bad job at all - just take your time on the removal and ensure you get all the fasteners out of your dash trim pieces before you go yanking on them. I also found that in addition to the pencil eraser, rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) wipes worked great to clean any residue off before reassembly of the unit.
