Default Less expensive option

Last October when I put new tires on my 89, I stripped one of the security bolts and had to drill it out and use a bolt extractor to remove it. When I priced the replacement set, I almost fell over. The cheapest I found was $149 on eBay and that was for a used set. My local dealer wanted $189 for a new set. I had the winter to think about an alternative and came up with a less expensive option. I purchased some 10mm button head stainless steel bolts from The Bolt Depot. The head was a bit too big to fit inside the recess of the center cap so a little shave on the lathe at work and they fit. Next, my friend drilled a hole in the center and inserted a stainless steel pin leaving it above th surface of the head. I polished them up real nice and they were done. McMaster-Carr supply had the security hex wrench and I picked up a small ratchet at my local Advance Auto. My total expense was only about $35. Here is a picture of the finished product.

Great idea, thieves won't have that wrench in their pocket. Out here in the woods an Allen Head bolt will work to keep the cover on.
