Default Clean your MAF!

I just cleaned my MAF - got the crud out and gave the wires a good spray down with MAF cleaner. What a difference! . Feels like I picked up 50 hp There was a bunch of grit and stuff blocking the screen and what looked like a small twig!

I dumped the K&N last Christmas and am running with stock paper now, don't know if K&N oil had anything to do with it, but this is an *easy* bit of maintenance that gave results. It's probably why ppl think they're getting extra hp from so-called performance MAFS - their stock ones were probably just dirty

That sounds like a good thing to do,but I have not tried it because that wire the size of a human hair, and a red one at that, scares the hell out of me.I'm afraid to get anything near it,even a spray cleaner. Is that wire tougher then it looks?
Well I see you have a newer car, mine's an 86.I'm sure it must be different.

I just cleaned mine out a couple of weeks ago when installing a new coupler and found what appeared to be part of a rose petal and some of my daughter's cats fur with some clothes dryer lint thrown in as well...

By design, it shouldn't be a maintenance issue - most work or they don't. Would like to see your BLM's before and after the cleaning - if it wasn't working, it's usually Rich/Lean. For those with a Scanner - scan it and see.

I recall reading a number of posts about K&N oil contaminating MAF sensors. That's why I stick with a paper element.

I'd consider cleaning it if I had one

cleaned mine Tuesday night- found small twigs in it as well. Don't see how it happened as the regular filter was buttoned down tight?

Yours is similar to mine, it is tougher then it looks, but use the spray cleaner on it, don't scrub on it or anything. Cleaning the maf sensor and changing the 02 sensor cleared up a lot of idle hunt in my car.

IMO the K&N is crap. Yes it will let in more air thus giving you more power, but it lets in more crap at the same time. I lose 2 MAF sensors because of them. Never had a problem with paper filters.

The K&N filter oil can be a real problem if you get carried away.

I would clean the MAF sensor on an annual basis. I would change the O2 sensor if my Corvette has over 75,000 miles. These two things will do wonders for your idle.

Beside you won't be spending a lot of money and both give you an excuse to hang out in the garage for a few hours.

I clean mine every 4-6 months as part of regular maintenance.

I agree. Mine was running real rough with lots of hesitation when hitting the pedal. The Chevy mechanic cleaned the MAF and told me to get rid of the K&N filters (I had the SLP triple intake which has the 3 small round K&N filters). He said it inhales too much oil from the filters. Then more particles & stuff stick to the sensor. I changed back to the stock dry filter and it ran fine and never had the problem again.

Excellent advice! And also proof that it is a stupid idea to remove the screen on your MAF. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Cleaning is a smart one however.
