I asked in the tech section and nobody responded. I need a new top for my 89 and have found one for a 96. Does anyone know if they are the same? they look the same but don't want the wrong item Thanks folks

They should be the same. The targa tops from 1984 - 1996 were all the same size (although the front mounting brackets went through several revisions), and Mid America lists 86-96 (one PN) as the only replacement soft top. Is the new top you're looking at near by? If so why not just drive over to check the fit.

Targa tops are all the same from 89-96.

If I understand his question........it's not the targa top.
His vette is a '89 convertible.
I do not think the 96 will fit it without a retrofit kit.

and on edit:
Just went over to Ecklers and checked. Here's what I found for the convertible top listing........
To Use On 1986-93 Retrofit Kit P/N 31685 Must Be Used.

So, yes it will fit......but........buying that kit from them to make the top work on your car will add another $190.00 plus shipping to the cost.
Just something to consider.

I have been thinking about replacing the top on mine this summer (back window is getting a bit milky and some of the stitching is starting to look a bit worn). Wanted to go with a newer top to get the glass back window (instead of the plastic), but the retrofit kit put it a little beyond the budget for me. May still do it that way though......just not sure yet.

Not a problem.
Hey us "vert" guys gotta stick together!!!

I did finally get on Mid America motorworks site (it was down for a while) and the price they quote for the retrofit kit is $180.00. A little less expensive (for probably the same kit??).

Your back window is plastic right???
If the price on the '96 top is really a good price (would need to research that a bit also) and it has the glass window..........still might be worth spending the extra to get the retrofit kit for it.

I had a guy rear end me Thursday and found out yesterday afternoon that my van is a total loss (1 ton van against my 1/2 ton van.......I lost ). Will be getting paid for it Monday (if all goes well ). I didn't drive the van that much, but will still miss it when it's gone. Anyway.........thinking on it this morning, I realized that I will be getting about twice what I tried to sell it for a couple of months back (vans don't have a good resale value here (but book on them is really good)). Might put me back into getting the glass windowed top for the vert (that extra amount for the retro doesn't feel near as bad now )

I did a search on the big auction site after I wrote the last reply and wasn't able to find a kit there (looked there during the Fall and didn't find one then either) so it looks like you would be stuck with MAM or ecklers for it.

Like I said.......if the price is "right" on the top and it is glass windowed (it should be).......it might be worth spending the extra on the kit.

Just some more to think about.

I really need to put in my sig..........."One long winded Bass Turd" (I talk Waaaaay toooooo much ). Just trying to cover all bases though.

Have a good one.

I also considered the swap to use the 94-6 glass rear window, and I like the defrost idea. The conversion kit changes the bows so that the rear window fold differently, our plastic windows fold in the center, which the glass can't do, so the kits change the way the back section folds and tucks the entire glass piece together. Other than that I was told they were identical. Should be a nice swap, especially if you got it priced right, your would probably have $2k in a new top, glass window, conversion kit, and installation, minimum.
