Default Spark Plugs Changing!

Tommorow im tackling the spark plugs firestone says they have to take the fenders out to make it easier but a buddy at firestone says he just uses a flex head ratchet and knocks hours off the time... So what do you guys think use the flex head and do it...

what?

If you cant reach the plugs from above, then crawl underneath for easier access, its not that hard to do. And yes a flex head ratchet helps out a lot.

Driver's side, I just unbolted the ASR unit to make it easy, no reason to mess with the fenders. Passenger side only the #8 plug is a PITA and there are different approaches, including removing the inner fender.

Flex head ratchet and you're all good. Yes, you will need to move some stuff around, like wire looms, ASR etc. And yes, you will scrape your knuckles...alot! I had to actuall kneel on the right tire to get the proper leverage on #8. Be carefull, it could be really easy to mess up the threads on that one. But no, you do not have to pull the engine or dismantle the front clip to change the plugs. Firestone simply would rather charge you the labor on taking stuff apart than buy the band-aids for there techs.

You might want to remove the couple of rubber hoses by the ASR to make getting to 5 and 7 easier. Wear long sleeve shirt. You might even see if you have a small kid with little hands remove the wires from the plugs. If you have large hands and forearms, buy some band-aids.

I use this tool for the plugs. They also sell just the cut down socket or you can make your own. I can remove the plugs in under 20 minutes and don't have to move anything.

Default I gave a few ounces of flesh

I did the plugs and wires and I have big hands. I wore the battle scars proudly for a few weeks after. No car I have ever owned was a tight as this one is though. But none of my cars have ever been this fun to drive either.

If you want to see a real PITA, try changing the plugs in a 4th gen f-body. half the plugs are under the dash. That job did require some dismantling.

If anything takes 'hours" off the time, then whatever they are doing is stupid. Changing the plugs shouldn't even take one hour. The wires are more of a pain, but still not as bad as many claim it to be. If you really want to make all that work easier, then install long tube headers

It wiil save some troube if you make sure all wires are out of the retainers, then tape the end of the old to the new and pull it thru.

Yep, they are routed thru 2 loom holders, they just snap in place. You might, if you don't already have one, get a looonnng pair of needle nose with a 45% bend, it will save you about 1/2# of skin, or at least wear gloves. My clips broke off, typical plastic after 16 years of high heat. I just slid some type wraps down the wires and pulled them tight with the needle nose.

Does this tool work on an L98 motor?
