Default Windshield Gasket

I am replacing the windshield on my 94 coupe. There is a thick rubber gasket along the bottom of the windshield between the dash & the glass. It is cracked, looks dated, the windshiel shop said it is a dealer part, and if I can't buy or dont want to pay for a new one, that he could just remove it and leave a gap between the glass and dash. He says lots of cars are like that, he sees no problem. Says that if I don't like it, to just stuff a generic rubber gasket in there to fill the gap after the windshield is replaced. Does anyone know if that gasket is functional or cosmetic. Your comments appreciated.

Don't have any experience with it, but I'd get a second or third opinion from other glass companies. Also, talk to a dealership and mayby bodyshop. I don't think I'd leave it out or replace it with a generic if it were me.

If you didn't need it then why would GM have put it there? I think you had better put one back in.

GM part# 10236368 is the seal windshield to dash and it's really quite inexpensive. I would guess a generic will do but I wouldn't do it without it, you'll see it every "damn" time you get in! It also adds a bit of support to the area also!
There's also on the bottom of the windshield left and right another molding that finishes off the glass at the bottom. Those moldings are left off the car by most installers because they don't know they're there. The part# 10045695 is for the lower both sides. These weren't on the '84 and '85 MY but on all '86 up. These are visible with hood up bottom of glass 1/3 or so the way across the bottom of both sides at wiper transmissions!
All three of these are available, inexpensive and I don't think I'd do it "without" them!!

At the very minimum it will prevent drafts and reduce rattles. A costly mistake to install a new windshield and find out afterwards you needed that gasket.

Thanks WVZR1- I have ordered the seal, the two left & right parts you mention (#10045695 ) are still on the existing windshield & in good shape, so I will ask the technician to ensure thay are moved to the new glass. Thanks very much
PS can you believe the reason I need to change the glass is that the replacement screen installed last year has a flaw in it, huge distortion right where I have to look thru!
