Where can I safely put the jack under the front of the car so I can put jackstands under the sides where you would normally put a jack when changing a tire? I know there is at least 1 crossmember or bar going across the front. Is that strong enough?
Use the crossmember that runs in front of the oil pan. it's beefy enought to hold while you jack it up. Here is a pic of how I got mine in the air for a tranny removal
You can safely lift the entire side of the car at one time and then place the jack stands under the car for support.
Place the pad of the floor jack halfway between the marked jacking points on the bottin of the facia. Before you raise the car, look up under the facia by the pad to find a hold-down stud; move the jack so the pad is either to the front or rear of that stud.
The stud on the driver's side holds the brake lines in place. The stud on the passenger side holds the fuel lines. Just make sure the pad is clear of the stud.
Raise the car (no need to open doors or wind down windows) enough to get the jackstands under the car. Then go to the other side and do the same. You can go back and forth as needed to get the car as high enough to do your work.
I can get my 87 about 16" off the ground this way in less than 5 minutes.
