Anyone ever used the engine restore stuff they advertise here. I have a 93 F350 with 209,000 and it uses a little oil (~2 qts/5000 miles) and I was thinking about using it to see if it helps like they advertise. Also have a 96 vette that may need a little internal spruce up, if the stuff could help.
The stuff I know of decreases smoking, increases compression, etc by changing the oil from 30 weight to 80 or 90, kinda like filling your engine with gear oil. I can't "restore" worn metal parts - you can only do that by replacing them. You pour that stuff in your engine, then put a for sale sign on it.
Nothing can put the metal back on the parts. Only thicker oil in hopes of lessening blow-by. You wouldnt believe the strain that puts on your oil pump/pump shaft. If its worn its worn.
Two maybe three years ago this came up. I said some good things about my experience with Restore. The C4 community beat me about my head and shoulders with a big stick for uttering such. Since I do not want another beating I won't say I kept the wifes Caddy going with it for at least 2 years.
Got to add, any of the snake oils that claim to cure allengine problems including gout are just that, Oil of Serpent. Nothing cures as well as new pieces and parts.
I've never used restore. There are certain additives that I swear by. Marvel mystery oil WILL help to stop top end smoke. (I don't care what anybody else thinks) and it's about the same viscosity as power steering fluid. Another additive I swear by is Lucas. I've actually seen noticable differences with the way a vehicle runs with this stuff. Granted, with Lucas, I never waited until the engine was tired. I put it in right after the break in period on a new engine. I only use Lucas in high hp applications (600 and up) and diesel engines. It helps keep the crankshaft centered in the oil film of the bearings under abnormally high compression and rpm's. I would certainly put Lucas in the truck, not so much on the 'Vette. Having been inside literally hundreds, if not thousands of gen 1 small blocks, unless you have some serious internals that need such protection, it's not a good idea.
By the way, base compression for the average diesel is 22:1. In some cases higher. Now put a turbo on top of that, and it's a wonder how the heads stay on.
Thanks for the great posts!!
I think I will use Muffins suggestion and when it gets bad, I will add it to maybe get another year or two service. Nobody knows what 2 years will bring and an extra few grand not spent today could be much more when it is time for replacement.
I've been using restore in my 89 chevy pickup (305ci) since about 60K on the odometer and use it in every other oil change. The truck now has over 200K on the clock and doesn't burn a lick of oil. With over 200K on your truck already...I wouldn't bother. I don't use it in the vette, but I just started putting it in my wife's hyundai (just broke 60K).

I put a can of MOA(BG's Motor Oil Additive, same as Restore basically) and a BG 44K fuel additive in my 90 Miata at the same time, Definite SOTP difference. I ran again only on the 44K the next time, not as big of a change.
I ran some Restore and the following time Rislone Ring Seal in my 86 Cavalier a long time ago, and noticed a difference too.
The SOTP difference lasted about 500 miles and faded to nothing by 1000 miles.
