My mother just had her 1987 coupe repainted about a year ago and when the place put her car back together, they put the rear corvette emblem back on the car.
The emblem is in bad shape so we would like to remove it. Does anyone here have any experience removing the rear stick-on emblems from the rear of their car? What should I use. I am afraid of ruining the paint since we paid a lot for it.
They are kept in place with a glue substance that is part of the emblem. I wonder what they used to put it back on. Heat is your friend.... put a hair dryer on that puppy to soften up whatever it holding it on. There are two "placement pegs" that align it on the bumper. Some people use fishing line to "cut" through the goop.
Once you get it off, clean up the surface as best you can with some adhesive remover. Then get a new emblem. When ordering the emblem you have to order the one that matches your car's paint. There is a a line of color trim on it that matches the paint.
The new one will have a blue backing you peel off to expose the adhesive. Stick/press it on, and apply heat to it again. Make sure it is all pressed down evenly so that all the letters are stuck to the car.
Actually, we're looking to get rid of the emblem all together. It looks like they used some kind of goop across the whole emblem to re-adhere it to the car.
I am mostly afraid of ripping the paint off with the emblem since it was placed on the car shortly after repainting so I am worried that it 'cured' to the emblem.

You are going to have to holes from the locating pegs in the bumper.
There are locating pegs on it? It is an aftermarket logo ordered from ecklers. I am tempted to think it doesnt have posts because before it went in for paint the logo was straight, and now it is crooked

You'll still have 2 holes in the bumper itself that the original pegs went into.
First off, thanks a million for the prompt responses.
Now about the original holes? The bumper has an indentation of the word corvette and never came with a rear emblem to my knowledge. Did 1987's come with emblems? This one is a gold add on and I hate it. The previous owner added it along with a bunch of gold stuff we are removing

I thought your mom's car WAS an '87? Now I'm confused. :) The early C4 bumpers from 84-90 had no CORVETTE indentation, and had two holes that a corvette emblem used to align itself. The '90 ZR1, and all 91-96 Corvettes had the CORVETTE indentation which some people put reflective lettering into.
Her car is indeed an 87 and I can verify it by the VIN. However it looks to have an indentation in it that the emblem covers up. This is an aftermarket gold stick on emblem. It also is indeed the early C4 style body panels and the rear flares out not in like my 1993. I'll have to take a look in the morning.
You may want to try a piece of fishing line...use it like dental floss. If you do run into a post going through the bumper, use a needle to slip the line behind the emblem. Then clean the glue off with mineral spirits. Rinse with soap and water.
yeah our letters are raised off the bumper, maybe the guy who painted it pushed the emblem on and didnt let the bumper completely dry and cure some before he did it and it made an indentation?
