Default 1988 temperature gauge help ???

I want to hook a back up temperature gauge on my car . The main one is acting funny. I got a gauge and it says tap into with a T fitting. Looking for some pointers as well as where does the stock one plug in ? The block or the radiator ? Thanks

The temperature sender used by the digital dash is screwed into the passengerside head between the 6 and 8 spark plug. Has a single wire spade lug type connector.

If you don't have the booster fan you can remove the plug in the block below #1 & #3 spark plugs, though that plug can be a pita I've heard.

To verify your gage, disconnect it - that should read LO. Then ground the signal wire and it should peg somewhere around 300. Next, hook up a scanner and compare the display to the Coolant Temp Signal. There shouldn't be more than a 5 degree difference. If these tests are ok, you need a new Sender (or you have an intermittent connection at the Sender). If the gage is off, you need a new or rebuilt Cluster.
