For the fist time, I have my vette at a shop to get fixed (LT4). I have always done all work myself, but I simply do not have the time right now.
So here is the deal.
I am having the valve seals changed, any I talked to my mechanic yesterday, asking how he was progressing.
I became aware when we where discussing it, that I doesn’t do this as I would have done!
He don’t set zero lash, where you turn the push rod between your fingers, at a given position for the valve.
He just put the rocker back on, and tightens it down. Told me that’s the way to do it on these cars.
???
I am not sure here, when I replaced the rockers to RR 1.6 on my 87 I turned the engine and set zero lash on each..
If its anything like a gen 1 (which i think its basically the same, most of the valvetrain is interchangeable with an L98) Hes full of ****. Id talk with him again before you end up with bent pushrods or other valvetrain damage.

A couple of quick questions- My L98 needs valve seals, what is a reasonable cost for a shop to do this? Is there special equip. needed or is it DIY?
It is not a terribly difficult job. You need a way to hold the valve closed (compressed air through the spark plug hole to pressurize the cylinder) and a valve spring compressor. There is a device that attaches to the rocker stud to accomplish this.

If your mechanical inclined and have a FSM and a basic set of tools you can get it done it certainly will be the cheapest way out, even if you have to buy a valve spring compressor and a couple of misc items you'll probably only spend $100 parts and all, if you have a friend that's done the job it's time to invite him over. If you have to farm it out anything around $300-400 is a bargain and I seen a lot of shops charge a $1000 or more. Problem is on these old cars other stuff breaks or is worn out when you take them apart like rockers, push rods, ign wires, hoses etc. Good luck.
