Other than the RED intake and plug wires whats a sure way to determine a true LT4 or one someone has cloned?(without taking it apart or out of the car)
I thought i knew-but maybe not>
thanks Gene(karshop) :blueangel:
The tach is different, also if you take out the oil filler plug and look inside, there will be a LT4 stamp on the head. But probably the best way to find out is to check the vin.
Extremely difficult if they have upgraded the top end using the LT4 conversion kit.
Assuming they are using the LT1 intake painted red trying to "look" like an LT4, you can look for the block off plates in the back of the intake for the EGR delete. Not sure if they say on the outside or look different in any way, but you could look for LT4 28LB injectors over the 22 or 24# LT1 injectors. Another giveaway would be the coil. The LT4 has a different coil than the LT1 and the connector is opposite of that on the LT1. Hmmm....I will have to think a little more and come up with some other differences.
I am assuming you are trying to find out if it a true LT4 motor regardless of what car or year Vette it is in. Obviously, all 6 speed '96 Corvettes are LT4's. You can also look at the VIN and look for the LT4 designation. I think it is a 5, but I am not certain.
You cant tell by the ovious, tach, plug wires etc. This motor is in a 92 car. I was told it is a LT4-it has a factory red intake(not a re-paint)But that could of been added.

I am not sure there is a way to say for sure that it is an LT4 without pulling the oil pan and/or the intake. You can take the oil fill cap off and see if it has stock LT4 roller rockers and studs.
Sounds like it's going to be more trouble than it's worth. Even if it is an LT4 in a 92, I don't think I'd want it. Isn't there some sort of EGR valve on top of an LT1 that has been plugged on the LT4?
The LT4 has a different coil than the LT1 and the connector is opposite of that on the LT1.
 I was under the impression that all '96 cars got a new-style coil.
Going out on a limb here, didn't all the '96s also have an additional crank position sensor for the OBD2 stuff or something? Maybe that will help determine if the bottom end came from a '96 car or not.
Hi Gene....How ya doing.......Merry Christmas....... :yesnod:
The 1996 Computer is much larger and more complicated, it went from 60 diagnostic codes to 140 in '96, so the LT1 would not run with this unit and vice versa, the LT4 would not run with the LT1 computer. Also in 96 the computer would have to be "programmed" against earlier years were you can "change the chip"......I'm 90% sure on this stuff........Thanks again for the Great help on the visor lense last year.........and hope all is well with you at the Holiday Season  .......Dave
