Where is the best place to buy them, Dana? And about how much should it cost to have them changed? I have 2.59's now and want to feel a little more pep from the get go but don't want to lose to many MPG's.

1996 coupe/auto
I have a 96 six speed. It could just be my car, but it had 3:45 in them and I changed to 4:11's and was dissapointed because I didnt feel much at all. I was deployed to iraqi thinking of them gears all year long. Then, finally put them in after the long wait and Is that all. I thought it was going to pin me hard into the seat. I did feel a little difference but not much to be happy over. It could be my car only for some weird reason. Others on the forum seem to feel that feeling I wanted. But in my opinion if your going to spend that much money, you should go big and get the 4:10's or 4:11's and in your car may make a big difference. My mpg did not go down, and if it did only went down by 1 or 2 gal/mile but not enough to notice. Cruising at 80 mph on the freeway, the rpm is at 2.5.

Forgot to tell you the price it cost me for my 4:11's. 1400.00 parts and labor, from a corvette shop in california called J and D corvette. And i do feel a difference but I might have been expecting too much.

Damn! Forgot to tell you I what I get on mpg. I dont know that figure but on a full tank I got 330 miles but it was more freeway driving than stop and go. About 70 percent freeway miles on that 330 mile on a full tank.

Man, you've been in to many jets! LOL J/kiding.
I don't mind losing a couple but going from 2:59 to 4:11's would shoot my gas mileage in the butt.
I think the 3:07's are what I want. Just need some idea of the cost involved. My mechanic says around $850.00. That's labor and a change over kit that includeds shims/bearings and everything. Labor is around $500.00.

Wow, thats pretty cheap. That a great deal compared to what i got mine done for. Hope you feel a noticeable difference.

$1350 total? That is really a lot. A cam or something else may be a better choice. Just a thought to get more HP. Also if you are thinking of racing you could switch to a D44 that has different gears already installed. I thought I saw one for sale in parts for $1500. That would be stronger and have the different gears you want.

Thanks, I might check it out if it's still there. You know how that goes though. Shipping and all that. Plus you never know what it's been through. I feel the 36 I have has been taken pretty good care of.
Not going to race. Just want it to move better when I want it to. I want to do a hotcam. Just figured the gears would be a lot less trouble at the moment. Cam/heads maybe this coming winter.
I sent you my thoughts via pm, check with the other guys that are running steeper gears is the best advice. TOPTECHX6 has run 2.59s 3.75s and 3.45s or 3.54s I forget which. Great mod for a real s.o.t.p. improvement jmho
330 miles on a tank of gas??? That is lousy gas mileage. . . .even with gears. . . unless you are cruising at 80mph constantly . . .or you've got your foot buried up the dashboard.. .. .
I've experimented with the best speed to mileage ratio and have found that 68-72mph (on cruise control) gives me the best mileage on the highway (25mpg or so). Going slower causes the car to downshift or unlock the TC when going uphill too often.
If I was on a long and relatively level highway. . .like the ones in Westchester county NY. 60 mph gives me an incredible 28mpg.
People think i'm sh***ing them when I tell them I get good gas mileage with that lopey idle and deep thundering exhaust sound. .. loving it!!!

Not trying to steal a thread but from Pete Kane I bought a Dana 36 (pumpkin only) w/3:73's for my '90. My Dana 36 pumpkin w/3:07's sits in the garage in the container Pete sent me from his house. Has 97,000 Arizona miles on it. Never had any trouble. I would sell for $250.00 plus shipping. DHL is approx. $85.00. Good luck whatever you decide.
My 94 has 3.07. Overall my mpg is 17.5 or so (probably about 60% city driving). There are also times it sits idling. So 18-19 would probably be more realistic. Oh, and I do drive my car "spiritedly"
On the highway, I get about 22.5 with the AC on. And about 24.5 with the AC off.

I have been modding my car since I bought it, the mileage now averages around 16 and I couldn't be happier Going sideways from a 25 mph roll is worth it to me. Watching Mojos videos and talking to Pete K got me motivated. Build it to run hard and even if you drive it less due to the decreased mileage it will still be worth it, jmho. John
Thanks for all the help guys!
I've decided to go with the 3.45's. If any of you know anyone with a good pumpkin only that will bolt right up for sale with these in it tell them to PM me. Mines a '96 auto. I might go that route for now instead of getting mine rebuilt. I could do that myself and save a bunch. I'm going to PM Pete K. and see if he has anything that will work.
A special thanks to "JD's White 93" for all his input!!

I think you will be happy with the 3.45's, my only suggestion is to consider doing a higher stall converter at the same time. Many of the same parts must be removed to do either job and the converter really compliments the gears.
When you contact PeteK about a pumpkin ask for a converter recommendation based on your mods and future plans, he knows his stuff and can give you a great deal. His help and support is priceless.
