Motor Trend reports Viper is on the ropes & production is rumored to cease 2011. Production figures approx., 1500 units couple years ago & 450 last year. Probably a done deal for Chrysler.
My take is competition is healthy(competition questionable w Corvette) and don't like to see a lot of folks unemployed.
Cheers

Well, I don't like to see anyone lose their jobs, but I am not a big fan of Vipers. Different strokes for different folks, but to me Vipers kind of resemble a clown shoe. I do however understand the super car appeal.
Now if someone loves Vipers like I love my Vettes, I fully appreciate that they might be upset. Having said that, it would seem to me that some owners of Viper might be secretly cheering this move as it enhances the collectability and value of their cars.
The reason I own Vettes is more akin to the reason why many people own Harleys. It involves 55 years of tradition of an American icon.
I like the viper myself.
The older ones look better tho......
It may leave like the camero and come back,
Meanwhile they have the 2 dr challenger comming back i seen one on mt not bad at all.
We all know what happens when the competition goes away...
The best example of complacency is the L88 1969 and the LS7 70 Vettes with their "430"/465 hp (factory) ratings and the unchallenged 1975 L82 Vette that made a "whopping" 205 net hp. Given their way, bean counters will "rise" to the level of the competition every friggin time!
However, if ya follow the GT1 racing scene, Corvette's competition is not the Viper, but the (V-12) Aston Martin (DBR9 in particular), the Selene, Ferraris, etc. The Viper hasn't been a contender - even in the top 10 for the last 5-6 years (if I'm not mistaken). But, none the less, I suspect the presence of the Viper kept the heat up in the 'General's' quarters anyway. I hate to see the Viper go away too.
The Viper is a poster car for Dodge. Even if a few hundred are made a year it would not hurt Chrysler to continue production. Look what the Cobra did for Ford in image. We still are seeing the name used on new Ford products. They sold a lot less Cobras than Dodge did Vipers even in their worst years. It still brings stares and will draw a crowd like the original Corvettes did in the 1950s and 60s. In a sense its the Modern day Corvette to the public. I remember how people reacted to the early Corvettes. You just don't get that reaction from the current models. But you will when anyone sees a Viper.
All these high hp multi cylinder gasoline-powered cars are heading for the chopping block, including our ZR1. The car industry will survive, but it's fast approaching the end of an era, folks
For someone not to like the viper; to me, is like a person not liking a vette.........why would you not like such an awsome car.
Tastes are different... Just a preference, but I don't like the styling. It does not mean that I would diss anyone else who likes them, I just don't care for them myself. The performance numbers are great, but to be honest, my C6 has all of the power I care to deal with. If someone needs the extra power and likes the Viper, I say go for it. Luckily, we are all a little different and that makes the world a lot more interesting.
Maybe this should've been posted in OT (where it belongs).
Oh yeah......BTW......I do like the Viper. I just don't remember it being part of the C4 line (I must've missed something).
Greg as you might be able to tell I am a life long Mopar guy and would love to own a Viper, they are awesome cars. I would however be the first to admit that the first Vipers at least "borrowed" a lot from the C4 design formula wouldn't you agree?
Large displacement pushrod engine with lots of torque, Dana 44 IRS, CAGS transmission lockout, clamshell hood... they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I'd say the Viper is very flattering to our C4's.
Viper production has never come close to Corvette and I will be sad to see it go but I do think it is inevitable given current economic conditions. I think the competition has improved both vehicles over the years, The first Vipers didn't even have A/C or ABS, Corvette made Dodge raise the bar there. Is there anyone who believes the new supercharged ZR1 would have been developed without an American competitor advertising 600HP, I doubt it.
