We almost bought a sweet black 84  The only reason we didn't was because we found an equally well manitained 85 with lots of mods  I would have been happy with that 84 too though :yesnod:
I had an 84 before my 85. It handled WAY better(z51) but was a lot slower. It was also an auto and i wanted a stick. It was a good car, but gave me a few more troubles than my 85.
The 1984 car was the top of automotive technology when it came out and had 21st century sci-fi styling that was carried through the GM line at the time. I feel that the car was and still is a great car and look to adding a bone stock mint 84 to my collection very soon.
I do not look down upon it and I personally wouldnt want a C4 after 1989 with exception of the 1990 ZR1. The original C4 styling & dash always and still appeals to me more than the round body cars. Ask yourself, when was the last time somebody who was not into or knowledgeable cars stepped inside your car and said "wow"?
Only the Early C4's with their digi-dash and hi-tech looking engine compartments can get that effect.

Huh....I get that effect whenever someone new rides in mine.
When I went shopping for a vette I would have taken just about anything, however there were a few things that I really wanted.
1. I like the 91 & up exterior styling better. (no flames, just personal preference)
2. I'm not a major fan of the earlier interior either
3. It had to be a manual tranny, 6-spd MUCH preferred
I couldn't see spending a lot of money to buy a car OLDER than
what I had, being that reliability was the reason I was selling my old car.
It just so happens that I found the 92 and was able to pay for it. I would like to have an 84 from the collectors standpoint, but there are many reasons why I wouldn't like to have it as my only vette. I race and thus it's not the best engine choice, it may be fine for reliability but it just doesn't make the power of the newer motors and it cannot EASILY be made to do so. Also the Dana 36 rear is not a good choice for a manual tranny car. The 4+3 doesn't seem to be the most reliable thing. I like it KISS "Keep it simple stupid" thus the 6-spd is the much better choice in that regard.
All of my local friends drive LT1 camaro's as well. Thus keeping the same motor with them gives us the ability to help each other with our technical problems and such. There are many reasons why I would never trade my 92 for an 84, but if I could have them both I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. By no means is it JUNK, it just doesn't do what I want it to do. It's still a vette and therefore I like it :chevy
It's kinda the same as everybody who cries about the optispark. You'll notice that the people who whine the most about them are the people who don't even have them. I knew about it when I found my car, I wasn't about to let a small thing like a bad distributor design stop me from getting the car I wanted. If you're gonna be afraid of spending a little money every 70k miles or so than you might as well be walking. I won't mind having to throw $300 at the opti when it goes because the car doesn't nickel and dime me to death the rest of the time. I think any vette is about the most reliable vehicle GM makes, it is their flagship.
I had a 1984 Corvette a few years back. Aside from being abit more sluggish than any Corvette I ever had, It was NOT a p.o.s. I thought (and still think) it was a great car. In fact, it went down in my Corvette history as being the only Corvette that did not strand me at one time or another :)
i love my 84! i have smoked a few tuned ports with my crossfire. :yesnod: my crossfir is modded... http://www.xram.com i also have 375's in the rear & many other mod's. as far as problems the only major problem ive encountered is blowing up a tranny(after 375's were installed)! the crossfire does have its problems but its still a great car! any tuned ports in the area wanna run before i put my 383 stroker (no more crossfire...holly 750) in this winter? :D
I didn't say what I said to hurt anyones feelings. I believe my post even stated that it was based on my local market. I can buy 96 auto's (which are substantially better than an 84 IMHO) for $15k around here. The extra $5k is more than worth it to me for the upgraded brakes, dash, wheels/tires, computer, and driveline. I haven't seen an 84-87 advertised over $8k for a couple of years (not counting convertibles). I'd feel ripped off if I bought a 96 auto for $20k just as much as paying $10k for an 84. Maybe those are good prices in other markets, but not from what I've seen locally. Hell, right after I bought my GS there was a 91 ZR1 for $19k. High miles, but great shape otherwise.

Yeah I've had that happen every time someone gets into the '87. The next comment is usually "what the hell is this thing?" while pointing at the crash pad.
