I m looking to do same thing - hate water pump over distributor and want to go faster
have a 95 lt 1 - anyone that has done it distrubuor in back - is there a lot of electrical rconfiguation, can you keep TPI or will Big Holy 750 fit under hood
I have looked at threads and to many options - I think doing the math a crate is the way to go --- $$$ = speed
any help would be appreciated
If I were you I'd just do a big-inch SBC. You can get a 406-inch crate motor for about $5,000 that makes 490hp and 525ft-lb tq out of the box. That's on 87-octane. I forget where it is, but I did the research a while ago. If you want even more power, you could build your own from an aftermarket 400-block, and take it out to 421 ci or so and make upwards of 550hp n/a, but probably won't be as cheap.
The problem I see with this is unless you are alot more mechanic than the average guy this would be a giant p.i.t.a. and could easily cost a small fortune and take a very long time. There are plenty of members who could pull this off no big deal but if you end up having to pay for someone else to fabricate this and that you will go broke. This is not a project for the average shadetree mechanic in my opinion. I am making no judgement on what your knowledge is just giving you my opinion and warning that this is a big job for most.
Its not as hard as it sounds. Some things in the engine compartment need to moved around like the AC case. It wont fit under the stock hood unless you cut a hole in it. The rest of the drivetrain needs to be beefed up to handle the power but that goes without saying on any major mods.
it would definitely be easier to drop in a big CI SBC.
Thanks for all the help, lots of great options - have the tools and skill. Just fishing - doing all the math crate seems the way to go. New suspension, brakes done, just need to beef up clutch, rear end and have fun
No one mentioned if I went to Carb if the hood would close ---
He went carb, and he had to cut a hole in the hood for the air cleaner. He also used an auto transmission, I think that makes it easier then a stick.
If you are going to all the trouble, why not just go LS6? Forum vendor Speed Hound makes/sells the engine mounts, headers, and can answer you questions, they are the shop doing the install for Corvette Fever's C4/LS1 project.
