Hi guys i was browsing for C4 tubes on youtube !
and i found out this amazing survivor! a truly 1983 Corvette
Is it true or possible?
they owner says that he has all the documentation
but ...from what i know the only 1983 its on Corvette Museum !
The 70? or so 1983 pilot cars would have ...the 10th digit in #vin for a 1983 will be " D" if its a 1984 will be a "E" just about all the 1983 vettes were used for crash testing and displays. then crushed. I know of 2 still around publicly. the white one in Museum.and another one cut in half through center then hung on wall at plant. rumor is a few escapted crusher and donated to tech schools [a pilot 1989 ZR1 was found at a tech school in Florida last year with 300 miles on it] so the answer is in the 10th digit in #vin .....CASE CLOSED!!! Can we get vin of this car?
Every year, the Corvette Assembly Plant turns out cars that are made before the calendar year changes. That's the same with almost every car maker. Typically, the Assembly Plant closes for a couple of weeks in late July or early August to make any changes in the production line. Once that is done, they start building cars for the next model year.
So there will be some 2009 Corvettes that are built in 2008, but they are not 2008 models.
The first year of C4 production was longer and started earlier due to a number of reasons including emissions testing and certification. GM also wanted to be able to sell a lot of cars and they did with over 50K 1984 Corvettes sold.
There were no 1983 (VIN year code D) Corvettes produced for sale to the public. There are different figures mentioned for the number of '83 test cars built (anywhere from 42 to 48) and the only complete car in existence is #23. It sat at the plant employee entrance for a number of years before it was transferred to the NCM.
ITs not! it was a January 20th production car, it was ordered in 1982 AS a 1983 C4 ....As the title says....1983 production for the 84 C4 was started up in Jan of 83 and the Vin# on this C4 is #00521.......its an 83 1/2 I have all documentation to back this up the order sheet and build sheet .

Yep, I guess that makes my '90 an 89 3/4.

No matter what he said...or whatever documentation he has, SHOW US THE #vin number !!!!! The 10th digit will tell the truth!
From my understanding, I went to the corvette museum and read the plaque in front of the 83 on display. Its been a year but I remember that vaguely that there were 43 83s made. I believe. Legitimate 83s. I believe they were destroyed and GM kept something like a couple of them. If you do your research, the 84 corvettes were built during 83. The only reason that the corvette was released late 83, was that they cleared all the inspection requirements for that year. The were released as 84s through out the production year.
Look at numerous pictures of the unicorn (83) in the museum. Look at multiple pictures. Check out the rims??? I have seen stock sawblades and I have seen the prototype wheel that was never produced. Hope this helps a bit. . I am always up to learning, any more information, please share.
It's all about the VIN number. When the car was made, or sold, really has nothing to do with the model year of the car.
The one that really interests me is the comment about the 1986 twin turbo. I think all of the turbos were crushed. There was a lot of work done on turbo charging in the late 70's.
Remember the 1976 gas crisis? There was serious consideration given to a v6 twin-turbo Corvette but it never reached production. A lot of the turbo research was turned over to Reeves Callaway for the B2K option.
I just love all of these urban legends. If you want the true facts about Corvette history you need to listen to the Dave McLellan podcasts. It's called Corvette Chief.

A CF member owns this car and he had a thread about it last year. IMHO, he can say what he wants about it being an "83 1/2" but the car is a 1984 model year.
Sure, it was built in the early part of 1983, but the year it came off the assembly line has nothing to do with the year designation of the car according to the 10th digit of the VIN.

The VIN, if he ever shows it, will probaly be:
1G1AY0782E5100051 with the "E" in the 10th position indicating the
'84 model year...this car was the 51st, 1984, Corvette built. Being the 51st '84 Vette built adds no significant $$$ to the market value; it's just another of the 51547 1984 Corvettes produced. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear
PS: rfn026's link to Dave McLelland's podcast is an excellent source of VETTE history info which includes interviews with some of the legends of Corvettes like ZORA, Dick Guldstrand, John Fitch, etc. If you have not yet viewed his site you are missing something very rewarding for a Vette fanatic! We all owe Dave a big "THANK YOU" for making this available to us!
As much as I love the sound of the flowmasters, if it was a 83 why would you even think of touching it with flowmasters. Wouldn't you want it as original as possible?
