Default 95 exhaust system

On the 95 coupes LT1 is that piece in the middle of the system a resonator or the main cat.

I am getting conflict info on this.

Some call it a resonator and some (muffler shop) is calling it the main cat.

I am looking to remove it but if its a cat it will make emission here in GA a issue.

Anyone with experience on this please chime in, thnks

That's a resonator.

The round goldish-colored thing on the left is one of the cats (one on each side):

and here's the exhaust, with the resonator in the middle:

Make sure you don't take it back to the muffler shop if they don't know the difference

I assume you are replacing the resonator with an X pipe. If not you are just wasting your time and money. Where in GA are you located?

Actually the shop was just going to put straight pipes in place of the resonator, i am over by Atlanta speedway, 75 south area.

So that is not a good idea to go that route?

Unless it's leaking or unless you like a droning sound leave the resonator alone.

The only two reasons to mess with LT1 exhaust are 1 you want it to sound like an aged Chriscraft speed boat or 2 you are pushing 400+ HP.

I will take that advice and pony up for some mufflers instead.
I was taking the cheap route and figured that it would have made a difference.

I appreciate all the feedback.

Another option is to replace the rear mufflers with straight pipes and replace the resonator with a Magnaflow dual in/out. The Magnaflow has a built in x-pipe and has sound diffusing material. I did this about a year ago and really love the sound. It is substantially louder than stock but not obnoxious. I have gotten tons of compliments. Just another option out there. BTW, the Magnaflow was less than $100 at Summit. Total installation $150 at most.

SO what is the purpase of the resonator. Would'nt it benefit your exhaust system to install the X-pipe to minimize the back-pressure. I guess what I'm asking if your not needing it for emissions I would scrap it. I'm a new vette owner myself and in the market of new exhaust ( LT with Corsa Sport system ) for my 96. In Texas they are strict on emissions as well.

The purpose of the resonator is to make the ride more enjoyable by eliminating the droning sound that would be there without the resonator. It works on the interference principle. When two waves meet in phase the resultant wave will have a magnitude equal to the sum of the two. When two equal waves meet exactly out of phase the result is no wave. So the resonator tries to use the exhaust sound waves from the odd bank to cancel out the sound of the even bank. A perfect resonator would only be possible for a single given input or in the case of our car a single RPM. So our resonators are well tempered. They are not perfect for any RPM but work well over a broad range.

The resonator has nothing to do with emissions. It's single purpose is sound elimination as described in the previous post. The original poster ran across a shop that was thinking of the pre-LT1/LT4 Vettes where there was a cat in that spot. The resonator is simply a dual in dual out muffler with two perforated straight pipes going through it.
