Default C4 VIN Puzzle

Hi There -

I've been trying to decode the VIN on my 1984 Coupe, but mine doesn't seem to fit the usual C4 profile.

I had the car checked with Carfax etc before I bought the car and it's all fine (otherwise I wouldn't have bought it!)

However......

The VIN starts: 1G1AY07

The 1G1 is fine: but everywhere I look, it tells me that a Corvette is always YY not AY.

Any C4 gurus have ideas or know where I can look?

Apart from this, the rest of the VIN checks out OK: engine, year, plant etc.......

Thanks!!

I believe all the '84s started with 1g1ay, the '85s and up were yy.

My reference book on vin numbers for 84 vettes states that 1G1AY is a good start for that year

In '84 the fourth digit was a restraint code (A) being "manual belts". Last year for that designator in the 4th "place". Interesting quiz though!

84 VIN examples:
1st Nation of Origin: 1 = U.S.
2nd Manufacturer: G = GM
3rd Make and Type: 1 = Chevrolet Passenger
4th Vehicle Restraint Sys: A= Non-passive/Manual Belts
5th Carline/Series: Y = Corvette
6th/7th Body Type: 07 = Corvette Coupe Hatchback
8th Engine: 8 = L83
9th Check digit to verify VIN correctly recorded.
10th Model Year: E = 1984
11th Assembly Plant: 5 = Bowling Green, KY
Last 6 digits Production Number starting with 100001 and up.

Starting with '85, the 4th digit descriptor (Vehicle Restraint System) went away and was replaced with:
4th Carline: Y = Corvette
5th Carline/Series: Y = Corvette

I would guess that within GM and other makes, there would have been further breakdowns between a given car model and series where there were different names. Corvette had no such "Series" so it got a "YY".
