I have had some minor issues with my '92, the worst being a dead Optispark at 87K+ miles. Had to replace the brakes, hubs and wheel bearings but these are items that have to be replaced on all vehicles sooner or later. The car you're thinking about buying has 14,000 miles on it, you shouldn't have any issues to speak of for quite a while. My Corvette was in my shop this spring for 4 weeks, but that was my choice to wait before making the Optispark repairs due to a lack of cash (could have put it on the credit card but decided to wait). I disagree with your friend about 1992 Corvettes, I love mine. Bought mine in August, 2000; I have put 12K+ miles on it.
I've had my '92 for 6 months now. No more nor less reliable than any other 9-year old car with 75,0000 miles. I've replaced the knock sensors, the ecm, the optispark/water pump, and a rear u-joint. Only the optispark/water pump was expensiive; all the others were cheapo do-at home jobs.
I've had my '92 for nearly 7 years and have had only minor problems. The only weak link that I kind find on my '92 is probably the optispark and then again all vettes from 92 to 96 have the opti. Yes, yes the newer LT1 and LT4's have the vented opti but I know a couple of people where the Opti still failed. Other than that my car has ran strong ever since I bought it. I bought the car with 35K miles on it and now it has 98K. I love my '92. A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a '92 vert for my wife and all I can say is that around here most 92 verts are betwen the $19-22k price range. The '92 vert that I'm looking for though has to be a 6-spd my wife will not drive an auto after she drove my 6-spd. Happy shopping.... :seeya
Ask him exactly what flavor he's smoking. The LT1 is an exteremly reliable motor until the Opti quits, and usually that only after MANY miles, such as 60Kk plus. It's not really any worse than a normal distributor, it just costs more and is harder to replace.
I've had my car for about 12,000 miles or so and haven't had any serious problems. My list of "problems" if you will
1. Broken belt. It decided it was going to shred itself. The 92 and early 93 uses a special double sided belt that's a dealership only item, $40. It's a belt, they wear out, the one that was on it was original with 50k + miles on it. Also had I thought about it at the time, I could have just removed the belt and drove the car home.
2. Dead battery. Oh yeah, that's a corvette only problem let me tell you.
A few months after I bought the car I installed a cam, roller rockers, etc. I've had the car with my mods longer than I had it without them. So far it's still running just fine and haven't had the first bit of trouble out of it. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere, I have full confidence that I would arrive. I have NEVER heard anything in particular about the 92 being less reliable than any other year.
You can't pass up that deal. If the price is right, the miles are certainly right. Give it a test drive and see what you think, I'm gonna bet that you'll like it, and it'll be one of the most reliable cars you've ever owned.
I used to have a '92, and it I did not have any problems with it. About the only thing that I had to do was fix the leaking intake manifold and a leaking front crankshaft seal. I did change spark plugs at 50k miles, though.
The only reason that I still do not have the '92 is some jerk could not see me on a clear day, and hit me in the side. :cuss
Nathan, I had the some problem on my '92. I had almost forgotten about that. I had on go at 5500 RPM and it cracked the hood paint a little. I then decided it was time to convert it to the later style belt. I just needed the power steering pump pulley and the idler and tensioner pulley. This took all of about 45 minutes to change. It cost me about $100, but the belts were around $40 and I had gone through a few already.
Bought my 92 Dec.2000 and its all the car I want. No problems that I can't handle. Whomever told you that 92s are bad, well he dosen't know his behindhole from his elbow! :bs
Welcome to the forum.
I think there were less service bulletins released for the 92 model, than there were for any of the 80s C4s, and the service bulletins continued to decrease
for the 93 to 96 models. This could indicate that the C4s got a little better each year (you can probably say that for most generations), but I don't think
the 92 will be much more prone to problems than any other year.
You can read up on the service bulletins at http://www.c4vettes.com
thats the most rediculous thing i have ever heard. I bought my 92 convertible with 8500 miles on it 3 years ago. The only problem with it was that it had a slow leak from the intake which LT1's are prone too. the gasket is eally thin from the factory. My mechanic put a thicker gasket on and it hasn't leaked since. I have had no other problems for three years. I love the car. It now has 18,000 problem free miles. I wouldn't worry about other problems as long as the car is legit. If it is I would go for it. Its a great car!
I just sold mine ONLY TO BUY A GRAND SPORT it was the best new car I ever bought sold it 9 years later with no problems but that damn battery always died ( I never drove the car)
Purchased mine new, have 36,000 miles on it, Drive it like I stole it (just about every mile), even spray nitrous all over it. The only problem was the optispark, replaced and no problems ever since.
With 51,000 miles on my car, the ONLY things that have been replaced....(repair work)... are the front brake pads and the fan belt!!...NEVER a recall or "unscheduled" repair......can't say that about ANY of my other 63 automobiles I've owned.....(NOTE: check the weatherstripping around the side windows, I've found this is the best indicator of how much a Corvette has been "babied"!!!)......GOOD LUCK!!!!
