Have a 1984 c4 - had to replace timing chain 1-1/2 years ago. Replaced timing cover with a cast aluminum one hoping i could get away without dropping the oil pan-no such luck. It was leaking a little but now it drips when sitting still. Can i replace the timing cover gasket and end up with no leaks? If i have to replace the oil pan gasket can i do it without pulling the motor? Locals want $400 for the job - ideas anyone?
i did it on my 85 without pulling the motor. it's not a bad job - a little time consuming, since you have to get the starter out of the way, remove the flywheel cover. my 85 had an oil cooler, so the piping removal/install was a bit tricky. if you're replacing the gasket, i suggest a felpro one piece. make a mental note of the location of the oil pan nuts, bolts, studs, brackets, etc. make sure to get the car high enough - giving yourself plenty of room to work. hope this helps...
Thanks for the response joe. Will a 1 piece gasket fit a 84? Also how do you get a i piece gasket in place if you can't get the pan off? Jr
i'm guessing felpro has a one piece gasket for the 84 corvette application. in fact, its probably the same P/N for most small blocks up to 1991. i got mine thru summit racing - contact them for application data. you have to get the pan off to install the gasket - period! no other way to do it.
I'm using the one piece Fel-Pro pan gasket on my 84. Has never leaked a drop. Changing the pan does not require lifting the engine, but you will need to drop the starter. Once the car is on jack stands, it shouldn't take more than an hour to change it.
