I referenced NH since I couldn't find anything specifically relating to the new procedure in Ma gov't websites. Sounds like NY is similar, so I assumed (yes, I know what happens when one assumes) Ma would be close. Only emissions testing will be via OBDII link.
Heh. Ok

Here is how it used to be :

1984-1995 Got tailpipe test, on a dyno. emissions levels were based on the IM240 program. 84-89 Had high limits, 90-95 had lower limits.

1996+ Got OBD-II test, they plug it in and your car tells them if its ok or not.

What mass did was tell all the stations they will no longer be doing the Dyne test (IM240, 1984-1995 vehicles) but only doing 1996+ OBD-II tests. They were told they must actually REMOVE their dynes by 01/2009.

Again, my interpretation based on the clean air act is that they will perform a VISUAL test and that is it. But you would have to call for sure.

In all seriousness, I'm looking at Salem, Hudson, Pelham. I've been an LEO in mass for 6 years and I just can't take this system. The laws make no sense, the courts are retarded. The AG doesn't even know her own regulations. The previous AG had an anti-gun agenda. Our wonderful gov wants to raise the cost of firearm permits to $200 in an attempt to reduce the amount of gun owners in the state. (btw: leo's pay $25, this isn't about me - it's about a system designed to rob people) Democrat political tactics are remarkably similar to the same gun control tactics Hitler used right before he sent the Jews/others to the concentration camps...

ehh. This thread is about emissions. sorry. /rant off

We didn't live in Ma all that long, and only ever had one +96 car. I only had the +96 car emissions inspected once before we moved and had dropped it off. I was present when the other two pre- cars got inspected, so I only remember the rollers and sniffer.

Not only did the house shoot down the fee increase they actually
lowered it to $40.00 Can you believe that!

Check this link http://www.redmassgroup.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=2065

Regarding emissions. My L98 has the stock exhaust. I want to put on a less restrictive system. If they are going to visually check for the cats
then should I just leave them and get a cat back system?

Yeah but it was defeated in the senate, so it's still $100.

Yeah, I'd leave the cats. They may get more strict on the visuals. Or less. Who knows. Either way, technically it should be there.

I got my 92 LT1 383 stroker inspected in June at a Boston suburban gas station. No sniffer, no dyno, no opening the hood. The guy just tooted the horn, checked the lights, and jiggled the front wheels. $29 for a PASS. I don't even know if I would have passed or not.

Emissions is every 2 years. Did you do an emissions test last year? if so you didnt have to do it again this year.

No, last year I didn't get it done. Now, I'll never have it done!

Just hollow out your cats so its just a decoy... They are just looking to see if they are on there they wont physically look to see if they are anygood. I passed with my Impala SS with hollowed cats even with the emissions tests

Just went this in June with my '85 and was told that the rules would be changing. The new inspection will also exempt cars 15 years or older. The current law is 1984 and older (missed it by a year). The new inspection will also include a visual smoke test-excessive smoke (I don't know who defines) and you fail. Amount of repairs is going up and has been tied to the consumer price index for succeeding years. Vehicles subject to emissions testing will now be done EVERY year instead of the current two (2). Altering the emissions system will be a failure and the waivers will not apply, regardless of the cost. Here is the web address for the proposal that was submitted:

Since the last of the OBDI cars are almost 15 years old, it's making sense.

Default Best and Brightest

I’m thinking about getting a new car and I’m leaning towards it being a completely non-practical toy. Here’s my situation… A couple years ago I bought a brand new G35S Sedan right when it was redesigned. I liked the car a lot because it blended the fun of a sporty car, with the practicality of a four-door and the comfort of luxury amenities. As an idiot enthusiast, I opted for the six-speed ‘S’ over the automatic AWD.I am replacing a 1994 Lexus SC400 and I want to experience BMW's great handling and road feel. 80% of the time I will be driving alone or with 1 passenger, but 20% of the time I will have my wife and some or all of my 3 kids along with me. I am undecided as to an automatic or a stick shift.

No lift is needed. In NJ they roll a mirror under the car to see if the cats are present.

They can't tell if the cat is gutted by looking at it, but the sound may give it away. The cats muffle more sound than the mufflers.

Default California Lowers Zero-Emission Vehicles

Air board also asked its staff to study an overhaul of the zero-emission program because it fails to take into account how many clean-running cars are needed to meet the state's global warming goals. Those goals were set by a 2006 law that requires a massive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions statewide. Rules have been modified four times since they were introduced. The biggest change came in 2003, when the Air Resources Board significantly scaled back the mandate and ruled that hydrogen cars, hybrids and cleaner-burning gasoline vehicles could meet the state's goals.

Can anyone confirm this?
You mention auto cars. Does this mean 6 spds are not exempt??

I believe by "auto" the tech meant automobiles and light trucks as he was not sure if heavier trucks would also be exempt.
