Default Top interchangable?

Will a top from a 86 fit a 96?

My son's been offered (for free) a clear top for his 96, but it's off a 1986. No need in taking it if it won't fit.

Thanks for any help.

Jake

I think they changed the fastening system for the tops in that time period. I could be wrong. They all use the same bolts but I think the bolts might have been in slightly different place.

Won't fit. The breakdown is 84-E86, L86-88 and 89-96.

Hope this helps.

Mike.

The breakdown above is correct however it is an easy change. Matter of fact I saw the older brackets on ebay the other day for cheap.

The only difference is where the screws mount. This converts it to the older (86) style.

You will also need the vinyl that runs across the top of the windshield -- that aside, free is a good price.

Thanks for all the feed-back. I'll pass it along to my son.

If that top is from an early '86, give it to me!

I have an 84-86e fiberglass top on my 94 vette and I didnt convert the brackets on the car.... I just converted the brackets on the roof. Its very do-able and quite easy.

I converted an 84-86E top to fit a 89-96 style roof.

* What I did is I took the brackets that bolt to the
top and I screwed them to the mounts on the top of the windshield.

* I then took some white washable paint and painted
the underside of the brackets so when I literally rest
the roof on the top of the car it leaves and imprint
on where I should drill the holes.

* I drilled them and tapped the holes then mounted
the mounts and it the top fit perfectly even better
than the one that came with the car.

* Then I put some Red Lock tite and made the mounts permanent.

I posted a thread last year about it which I think might cover it better with some pics
