Default Why did GM do this!!?

Why did GM go from 1g in the skid pad in 84 to around .9?'s?????

WHY WHY WHY?
And why does everyone talk about the Z06 doing 1.03g's when the 84 has been doing 1g for over 17 years?

You want the truth? It kinda hurts. Owners complained about the rough ride. Yup! I'm serious.

The Z06 pulling the #s and the 84 pulling the #s is a very different riding experience.

A stock '88 Fiero GT will pull 1.2 Gs.

It has to be an '88 though. The only year of the Lotus suspension. I had one and it was awesome. I sold it for the down payment on my 'Vette. :D

..And I thought I was bad!

Your showroom 84 will NOT pull a solid G.
It pulls .89-.93

They used a "special camber setting" for the solid G test.
Not that lateral G's means a whole lot other than to fill magazine space...

I think the 84's slalom speed was unimpressive (Like 64-65mph, later C4's did 68mph, and I think the c5 does 69.5)

I am a firm believer in the philosphy of softish springs and firm roll bars with stout bushings and good shocks.

this will provide a great ride, without rattling you to pieces and at the same time give great handling.

if your spring rate is too high, the suspension will not respond smoothly and can become twitchy. Hell, at Sebring, the race teams soften the springs and firm up the bars to find the balance that will work on that bumpy track.

BTW, BMW and Audi are pioneers in this game... GM finally caught up in the late 80s early 90s.

Personally, I like the balance of my Vette. But could be better... and it will!

I have FE1 springs and have already upgraded to ZO7 sway bars. I would be best to just leave the FE1 springs and get some good shock?????

I would... I have the FE1, also... and if I did an upgrade, I was going either coil overs or stock replacement... I need to do something... the rear spring is delaminating!!!

This site has all the specs you need... http://www.vettenet.org/susp_chart.html

the spring rates are in Newton Millimeters...

the conversion is...

newton x .2248089 will convert to pound-force/mm

ok... then to get to inch, multiply by 25.40

so.... the 1992 FE1 has a front spring rate of 73.2 NM/mm...

hence, 73.2 x .2248089 = 16.456

then, 16.456 x 25.40 = 417.98 lbs/inch

... gotta love the Pocket Reference Guide!!!
