I hardly ever use the A/C in my 92 LT1. I used once a month ago and it worked pretty good. I went to the car wash Saturday and decided to turn it on instead of rolling the windows down and noticed that it was not very cold. This is when I noticed the blinking climate control light. The manual says that it may need to be serviced (charged). My question is: Is it bad to not get a charge on it immediately? I have heard both. I also am wandering if it is bad on the system to not have a constant charge. My concern is it may be a leak and I don't know how pricey this may be. It is not a DD and I hardly ever use the AC. Should I get it into the shop immediately or can it wait a little? Like next Summer?
The chances are that the system has detected a low Freon condition at the low side pressure switch.
You "could" get away with not doing anything until next year but if the refrigerant has completley escaped, that may mean dirt and contaminents could be working their way into the system.
The C68 Electroninc Climate Control system uses the air conditioner side to dehumidy the car when you turn the defroster on. With high humidity and moist air, you may not see the defroster work as quickly and hot humid air will not be dried out.
The 92 used R-12 Freon as the refrigerant and it is becoming hard to find and when you do find it, it's expensive. Retrofitting the system to R-134a would be the thing to do.
Find a reputable shop with experienced A/C systems techs and get an estimate to do a proper retrofit. You will save in the long run by having a properly working system.
