i've done a search, but couldn't find the answer i was looking for.
i'm reassembling the steering column in my 84. it's got a tilt with the telescopic (moves in and out) wheel. the problem is getting that spring between the upper bearing, and the horn contact compressed.
i have a spring compressor... but there's a C clip that keeps everything tight, and keeps the telescopic part of the shaft from coming all the way out. but, i can't get the spring to compress, because the telescopic shaft keeps coming out... how do you get that shaft to stay in, inorder to compress the spring?
how do you lock it down? the lock is in.. that C washer keeps it from coming out all the way... but i can't get that spring compressed enough to get that washer back in.

maybe you could elaborate.
its been a while. I think you have to put the phillips head screw back in, push the collumn down and tighten the screw. Then attach your tool.
All i can remember is pushing the shaft all the way down, putting the spring on, then the assembly, and while my buddy pushed hard on the assembly i slipped the C-clip on, it took a few times, its was hard to do, but not impossible.
Your problem is because you have the wrong puller tool; you need the type for tele wheels that has a pin in the center to hold the tele rod down while you compress the sping in order to slip in the C-clip.
