Default Headlight bushing change...HELP!

Does anyone have a good written procedure (with pics would be helpful) to change the driver side headlight bushings? Thanks in advance! JOHN

Stickied in C4 Tech/Performance. I followed it to a T, except for my headlights not having the lower mounting bolts.

When I did mine I had to use a Dremel to take a bit off the diameter of the bushings to get them to fit.
Wasn't in my instructions.
Only one of them I think.
Other than that it was straight up.
I put in the metal gears but my old ones were still ok .

Is this to replace or repair? Wouldn't it be easier to just replace them? I paid $290 for a NOS pair and I just have to put them in ...

The bushing I bought where $5.00 set, and hour of my time per headlight, you do the math.

I'm not great at this sort of thing. I figured new ones are about $500 each from GM and $300 each on evilbay so $290 for a pair is a great deal. Trust me I'd rather pay $10 and I have plenty of time to waste!!!

I bought my bushings at Home Depot for less than $3 for all six. Definitely don't get raped at the dealership on parts and labor by buying all-new headlight motor assemblies when all you have to do is replace the bushings. That's the epitome of The Corvette Tax!

Take it easy, guys.

There are some people that just don't have the mechanical ability to tackle even the simplest of jobs concerning cars. Perhaps FLY_LIFE is one of those people.
I agree on the Vette tax....maybe he has the scratch to be able to afford it.

Recently I had to face the same thing. I asked on this forum and got great help and advice. I am NOT a mechanic, I cut hair for a living, but with the encouragement of the members here I ordered 2 sets of bushings from Zip ( was told wisely that if I am doing one headlight, I should do the other)

While I waited for the parts in the mail I looked at every thread and sticky I could find here. Searched Google and read various other articles about replacing the bushings, and printed out a small pile of documents with photo's.

A friend of mine helped me (extra hands were nice) and we had both headlights fixed in a few hours for $11.00 . They work perfect !!!

I was told, "it may be the cheapest fix I will ever have on my car" and they were right. I had to replace my clutch and slave cylndr and paid a mechanic to do that work ( WAY beyond my comfort level ) and paid $1000 in parts and labor. I just purchased a FSM for my 88, and at least now I can inform myself and pick my "battles" and decide which ones I feel comfortable doing, and which I will leave to the professionals. I know that I can take an asprin for a headache, but I can't do brain surgery. I am finding my own comfort level as I go along.

I find the wise and knowledgable members here on this forum to be the BEST, and I am deeply thankful for the time and explainations I read here daily. I read almost every post whether it applies to my car or not, because it MAY someday be an issue I might face.

If the bushings don't work, then try the motors, but for a few hours and $11.00 it is worth a try - at least it was for me.

Good luck, and AGAIN thanks to all the members who are patient with us "newbies"

An 8penny nail and a piece of sandpaper will do in a pinch. Thats what I used on my old 88 when I did the bushings. Need to do my 92 this weekend, have a dremel now, probably pick up a punch tomorrow.

A tip I was given when I did mine was use an old drill bit backwards - worked perfect.
