Default "Frisbee" removal question

I'm thinking of removing the frisbee on my 91 L98. It looks like there are just four bolts holding it on. Is it as easy as just taking off the 4 bolts and tossing everything in the trash? Or do the bolts go back in? If the bolts go back in, do you need thick washers to make up for the thickness of the frisbee? Is it worth the aggravation? Thanks in advance for your collective help.. Mike

By what I have read here, you do need spacers. I don't believe it makes much difference with performance.

I removed mine, and don't expect any great surge of power, it ain't gone to happen. I installed spacers and installed the nuts and don't be surprised how heavy the disk weights.

That's how I did mine. If you are going to install a camber brace (as I did) it will need to come off anyway. It only weighs ~3.5 lbs on the L98 so don't expect a great gain but it IS 3.5 lbs of mass the engine dosen't have to spin up.

Leave it on. Its designed to balance out the front rotating mass. No real gain from taking it off.

I'd leave it alone. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yes, yes and yes.
I used thick lock washers between bolt heads and the front of the WP pulley just to be sure the bolt ends would still clear the WP.

This mod is worth ~10chp gain so don't expect a real SOTP bump in power but, if you can make consistent passes down the 1/4 mile, you will see about a 1mph gain in trap speed w/o the frisbee...

Default Frisbee? Come Again!

Alright guys, in all my years, 65 to this point, I've never heard of any
engine/automotive part call a "frisbee". What is it and where is it
located? My first thought was that it was some sought of window
ornament or decal.

it is a flat disc about 8 inches in diameter that bolts to the water pump on the L98. A lot of guys call it that but it's really a damper/counter balance. Some people believe that there is a gain in HP to be had by removing it, others disagree.

It is a damper for the AC. It is used to dampen the shock to the belt drive system when the AC cycles. On early L98s, it is large and weighs ~10lbs. 90/91 dropped to 3.5lbs. LT1 on never had one.

So what have we learned here so far...
1. Definately remove it
2. Don't waste your time
3. No real gain in power
4. +/- 10chp gain in hp

ok, thanks

What it comes down to, It's your car, do what you want to it. Weigh the advantages/disadvantages and press on. Keep in mind, if it came from the factory with it, it's there for a reason. The rest is up to you. Enjoy your car!

I think that you will notice more difference with the manual than you will with the auto.

I removed mine on my '88. It wieghed about 9 pounds, and there is no imbalance on the engine.

There is no need for it.

Extra weight is bad all around and it just makes things more difficult to work on. Removing that was one of the first things I did when I bought the car.

I removed the Frisbee from my "89" and "91" and did not have to add any washers to the bolts. The bolts cleared the waterpump shaft just fine.

So is it pressed on, or once I take the four bolts off, it should fall off? Sorry, I just hate surprises!
