Default 1985 heater core removal

I'm a new owner of a 1985 Corvette who wants to do as much of the repairs to the car myself. I'm trying to remove the heater core and have all the screws, heater cable, and ducts removed (as best I can tell). I still can't get the cover to come off. It acts like it's being held somehow at the top. What am I not doing right? I have a Haynes manual but that isn't any help. I'll be buying the service manual soon I can tell. Thanks. I'm having a blast driving this car! I :flag

The factory manual read the same as the Haynes. Only 4 or 5 lines telling you what to take out :mad
Do a search on the Tech section. There is a tread about this a few weeks ago. Take at least 10 hrs for this job.

Good Luck

VERY patient, and yeah Haynes sucks pretty bad. Helm or GM shop would be better.

I did the heater core in my '84 last august. There ARE a couple of screws at the top of the housing. One in particluar is only accessable to a double jointed monkey. Guess what that makes me? I ended up with so many small cuts and scratches on my hands and lower arms, you wouldn't believe! I didn't time myself but it was WAY more than 10 hours for me. The Helms manual isn't any more specific than you are describing. The parts book actually has better pictures. No instructions (?) but at least you know what it is that you can't find or reach. Good luck! Keep a pint of plasma on hand, just in case.

I did this last year and its a handfull. Get the GM shop manual and the Haynes as a backup. Be prepared to get real involved in the disassembly of the dash...passenger side to be exact. Be patient, and try not to force things; you end up breaking more parts that way. If something won't come apart read the GM manual carefully and post inquiries here on our forum. Good luck. :chevy

 the new heater core is in my garage since late September  Don't even have time to work on the heater core yet. Waiting for the temperature to go up to around 50-60 degrees to start working on the engine again before attacking the heater core:( My garage is too small to put the car inside to work on in the winter :mad

I had just purchased my 85 a couple years ago and had driven it to work to take a buddy for a ride. It was about 10 above, we were doing about 75, and it BLEW. Instant fog on the inside windows.
I changed mine in my unheated garage, and it was below freezing. That didn't add to the fun.

Well, after a weekend of scrapes and cuts I got a new core put in! Good thing my carpet is red so the blood blends in. Thanks for the tips and advice.

You've revived a thread that is 10 years old, that is a major no-no.

Bad n00b.

CFI-EFI passed away a while back, that's how old this thread is. Crocamonga says LOCK IT DOWN.

Yup, typically the white pin that connect your "controller" (whether manual or digital) gets old and breaks. As a result, the blend door doesn't operate. Often, it swaps from hot/cold randomly.

I've also seen this happen in cars where the radiator is nearly empty.

Heater cores can also get clogged.

Several threads -- with pics -- in the tech section to help you sort it out.

M85 (above) is correct, reviving old threads serves no purpose...especially when SO many newer ones exist.

FWIW 84-89 are all gonna be the same on this procedure.
