i am having a major problem the coolant in the coolant overflow tank is bubbiling up with the cap on. The tank starts to bubble near cap and starts to overflow with the cap on does the thermostat need to be changed? I KNOW for sure that i need a new coolant tank ?
How fast does it start to overheat? How old is the cap?
I would put a new cap on the surge tank, fill it with coolant, burp the system........ then see what you have. Thermostats dont fail that often.

Burp the system as mentioned. If you don't know how to do it, then follow these instructions and have another person to help you do this as it takes two.
Take off the radiator cap and hold the car from 1800-2000 RPMs and add coolant as the level goes down and refill it until it is topped off. Regardless, you probably should flush the entire system, replace the resovoir and cap, and then purchase a new radiator cap as well. It might be the culprit to your problems and is inexpensive compared to engine damage from overheating.
