I just got my car back from the body shop after some minor repair to it. Someone had side swiped my car in a parking lot and ran :mad . Anyways, the question is...When will I be able to wax my car again? They told me I can wash the car, but not to wax it for 90 days. That seems a little extreme. I know that you should let the paint cure...but isnt that a little much?
I just had my 91 re-painted and the guy told me to wait a week at max… I did ask him about some of the rumors with waiting 90 days to wax it and he said that this was an old through back from yesteryears. With the new process and paints today, you can wax it the very next day according to him. He still likes to wait at least till the paint fully cures and depending on the temperatures should be no more than a week.
My vette painter, hes done thousands of vettes over the years, says that even with the new PPG paints and all, that i should wait 3 mos. to wax it. The new paints really dont need it that much anymore anyway. Puttin wax down will not alow the paint to cure and it will slowly bubble and peel off.
I dont think i'm going to use any carnauba when i do wax her, im just going to use Liquid Glass.
From what I understand, its not really a problem to wax the car shortly after a paint job nowadays with these new paint technologies.
However, why chance it? Id keep the car clean by washing it when needed and give it some time to fully cure.3 months may be excessive but Id give it at least a month or two.
Repaints are never as hard as the factory paint jobs. The factories bake the paint on making it very durable.Repaints are always softer.I know this is true because if you ever sand down a car that was repainted, the repaint comes off fairly easy while the factory job is alot harder to sand down.
Also, sometimes after a paint job, when the solvents are still evaporating, problems began to show up.People that waxed their cars will be blamed for doing it too soon by the shop, when in fact it was the shops mistake or a paint problem.A month of waiting or so will show you if any blemishes will show up.Im not an expert on this stuff but its something ive picked up from painters. That way you can bring the car back and have it fixed if needed.
:)
Who told you that paint these days do not need wax? NOT!! This is not a flame, all paints need a wax or the clear coat will start to brake down and waxing todays paints will not stop it from curing.

If you can still smell a toxic clear coat smell hold off on the wax for awhile... Todays clear coats do in fact dry fast... Surface touch... but, there is still a little curing going on that may take a little while.... depends on weather conditions also.... be safe not sorry.... Just my .02.. :)
Acually you shouldn't use a wax at all...You should use a "Glaze" It will be shinny and able to breath. When your car is painted then buffed, the body shop puts a Glaze on it before you get it.

I guess everyone has their own idea. My painter said wait 30 days. Like a previous post suggested, I'll avoid the "I told you so" if there is a problem later by waiting the 30 days. It's too blasted cold to wax now anyway. :D

I am a painter and here is what will happen if you put a coat of wax on your fresh paint. The thing will cloud up big time!! fog, haze, But here is the good news, you can wet sand the whole car after you strip the wax off and polish it back out again. The shine will come back!!!! But that is a lot of work. You best bet is to glaze it. And listen to what your painter said on the car 3 months. I know that seem like a long time but its winter out right now. I just painted my cay this last fall 2 gallons of clear and zanioed it like a month later do problems. PPG 2021 clear :D
