I got my car last summer and the security system has never worked. In fact, I've never even used the fob (it does have a new battery - that's one thing I did). I'm at a loss as to where to begin to look for the problem, and I'm a little reluctant to take it into the dealer for fear it's something simple that I'll be charged an arm and a leg for. I don't even care so much about the security system as I do the remote locking and unlocking (pain to use the key). Where in the heck do you engage or disengage the security system?
i think I saw it in the owners manual,I didn't read it as I use mine even if it is a pain in the rear.I think it has something to do with the sequence of key operation
2. Lock the door with the power lock switch or PKE. The security light will come on.
3. Close the doors The security light should go off. Now, if a door or hatch is opened without the key or PKE the alarm will go off.
The security system will not arm if you lock the doors with the key or manual door lock or if you lock the vehicle after the doors are closed.
You can test this by leaving a window down and after setting the alarm reach in the car and unlock the door. It says wait 5 seconds after setting the alarm.
I was reading that, too, Ocala Guy...it would help if the *&^ (%@# PKE worked. It doesn't. I think it's shot. :cry Looks like I'll have to replace that before I can test the system. I remember the guy who I bought the car from complaining about the security system going off all the time while he was washing the car.... I was thinking he may have disabled it somehow.
Mairi is your alarm enabled or disabled? If is disabled you can read in the owners manual how to enable it. Thats a good way to see if the remote is working. If it will not enable then the remote isn't working. :yesnod:
Re: Security system problem on a '96. (CowboyNVette)
It could be that the car doesn't recognize the remote either. There is a way to program a remote to the car. If your car forgot the remote, then you may need to redo it. I don't have the procedure for a '96 though. Mines a '94 and I'm not sure it's the same.
