Loud knock under dash

Loud knock under dash
Need some help on this one. I have a '96 that has developed a very loud knock under the left side of the dash when I go over even a small bump. Sounds like the whole instrument assembly is going to fall out or something. How do I get under the dash to check it out without taking half the car apart - or is that the only way. I'm afraid that something expensive will happen if I don't fix it.

The carpeted hush panel and the metal panel underneath it are pretty easy to remove - maybe with those out of the way you can figure out what's going on under there. You may also want to pull the driver's seat and track so that you don't have to become a contortionist.

Well, go figure. After an emergency braking situation this weekend, the clunking noise has gone away - at least for now. In the six years I have had the car, this is the first time the ABS system has been called into play. I thought I was going to lose the front two feet . I was going along the access road when a car exiting the freeway tried to take an immediate right in front of me onto to a side road. I got a better look at the side of his car than he ever has. Missed him by about the width of a cat hair. I had to pull over and get my breathing back to normal. Anyway, maybe whatever was loose got jammed back into place.
