Replace O2 sensor?

Default Replace O2 sensor?

I'm going to dump the pre-cats on my '89 coupe and replace with a Mid America Y pipe and new high flow cat. I'm having a local mechanic do the work and I'm wondering if I should replace the oxygen sensor while he's got things taken apart. The sensor that's on the car works fine and I've only got about 56K on the car. If you all think that I should replace the sensor, what brand should I get and where should I get it? I thought that some folks here said to stay away from Bosch O2 sensors. What do you all think.

P.S. My mechanic said that after Jan. 1st all cats must be OB2, even on OB1 cars.

I don't even know what a cat being OBDII as opposed to OBDI means. That deals with computer diagnostic systems, not the cat itself...

And . If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm not sure what OBD1 or 2 means either. I thought that the later C4s had two O2 sensors while the earlier ones like mine have just the one ahead of the cat. Maybe some cats are rated for two sensors while others are rated for just one. Some enlightenment on the subject will be appreciated.

I'd replace it especially if you don't know how many miles are on it. The O2 sensor is a maintenance item anyway. It should be replaced every 30-40K miles.

56K on the car. What brand should I replace it with, who's a good source for sensors, and what do they cost?

If you're replacing them, I used Bosch from Advance Auto. Mine were like $50 because their the heated 4-wire design, but yours should be cheaper.
