Hey guys, thought you might be interested in these pics. I hadn't mentioned it before (wanted to wait till it's done), but I was taking #682 out for a ride around Thanksgiving and had an unfortunate incident with a gravel truck. He hit a bump as I was getting ready to pass and sprayed rocks everywhere. :mad From the size of a pebble to the size of a golfball :cuss Anyhow, as I surveyed the damage, I found that it hit about every panel on the car. Hood, bumper, fenders, both doors and 1 quarter. I decided to have the whole thing redone.
When I took it into the shop, I found out the car had some paint work done before. I never really took note, but the hashmarks were cleared over; a definite sign the hood was repainted. As they started taking more emblems off, they found that many of the panels had been redone, and not redone correctly. They hadn't removed the mirrors or the emblems orginally, and it was clear it was originally a rush job.
I found a great painter who restored the car to a better than original finish. I'll put some pics up next week of the results. Bottom line, stay away from gravel trucks on the highway :conehead
Scott -- She's going to look gorgeous when you are all done. Have you decided to put the paper pinstripes back on (ala the factory) or are you going to paint them on and put clear over them? You sacrifice a degree of pseudo-originality if you paint them but the end result is sooooo much nicer.
Fourthrail -- a professional GS paint job should cost $5000 and up, more so if you are changing body color due to the need to repaint the door jambs and such. Any less than that and I'd be suspicious.
Hutch - After much soul searching, I decided to stay with the "factory config" using the tape. I'm not sure if I'll be kicking myself in a couple of months or not. I'm still envisioning pearl red hash's and a pearl white center stripe on top of the Admiral Blue :D Not sure how it would have looked though.
fourthrail - I would agree with Hutch on the quote. I had a component of the overall cost go to insurance, and the other piece was an early wedding gift  from the owner of the shop, who is a close family friend. I definitely found out that it's good to know the right people!
Scott -- I understand about your decision to stick with the decals. Besides, there is an obvious cost delta there, as well. But if you put a pearl white center stripe on it, you might as well go for the gusto and paint in the pinstripes, too. You also need to consider the slight color difference between pearl white and the arctic white pinstripes.
Whichever way you go, she'll be gorgeous (again!).
I guess you can thank the gravel truck for helping you improve your paint job........

Definitely truth in that
Hutch: The matching of the paint and the additional labor required to paint the stripes definitely played into my decision to stick with the tape. Incidentally, the shop owner had called to order the neccessary replacement items (pinstripes and hashmarks) and found that the rear (either the decklid or the back, can't remember which one) were discontinued  Have you heard anything to that effect?

Yep, I knew at least one of tape items is no longer available, just didn't know which one. I bought a complete set of pinstripe decals and hashmarks some time ago just to hold onto. Of course, they're probably all dried out and worthless now, anyway. :)
Stripes are stripes, though. If your painter needs a missing item, just order one of the other part numbers and have him cut it to fit.
Hey, let me know which stripes they are (part number) if you can't find them. I have a couple for the rear, not sure which part (on top of the bumper or under), that I accidentally ordered when I repaired the front bumper.
Thanks Dave!! Actually, my paint guy had already fabricated a set for me. They turned out really good too. I'll post some pics of the completed work this weekend.
