Default Another Mirror Question

I am upgrading my rear view mirror to the one with the lights. My question is what is the little light for under the arrow? Is this for illumination when you open the door? And what are there 5 wires comming off the mirror for? I know the set of two is for the map lights (+ and -). Is the other set of three for +, -, and one for the door switch?

That light turns on when your parking lights or headlights are on. It illuminates the center console gently.

Yup... thats the map light so they call it. So dim that I certainly can't read a map by it at night!

You mean it stays on, all the time, when the parking lights or headlights are on. Thats not distracting? It must me a slight wash.

I was mistaken.. the larger ones are called the map lights. The small one is hardly noticable... only time I remember its on is if I'm in a really dark area and I glance over at the console

Hi Jon,
I installed one I picked up at Carlisle. On my late '86 the wiring was in the header. There were a couple as you described that didn't connect to anything. ( these were from mirror) I just left them under the header. All lights work, the red seems to just illuminate the console area a bit. I thought perhaps there was some kind of read out on the mirror that that other connector was for, maybe a thermometer?? but I never did find out.

Barrier...I suspect the extra set of wires is a setup for both a three wire and a two wire system. Its cheaper for GM to make one mirror with two wire configurations then to make two mirrors each with there own wire setup.

Yup, all the time when the lights are on. It is very dim. I only really notice it when I put my hand onto the shifter and notice my hand is illuminated. :)

Correct it puts a dim light in the cockpit when the lights are on. It really helps, since there is very little reflection into the cockpit from the digital dash. The dimness keeps it from being distracting, but throws some light on the console area.

On my 85 there was no wiring for this mod. It was relatively easy to wire though. From the mirror, wire to the driver side through the top of the windshield frame; then down the pillar; then right into the headlamp switch.

I just pulled mine apart, (no wires) I'm going to run it right from the vanity mirror for the main map lights and down to the switch for the console light.
Easy pickins...Yea right..Murphys Law here :D
