Alternator is 1 yr old rebuild. When I start the car voltage warning light comes on at 11.5 - 10.9 volts and stays there for a few seconds if its warm out, and up to a minute if its below 32*F. So it was 20*F the other morning, and after a full minute of 11.5 volts the warning light goes out and the interior lights get brighter w/14.1 volts on the meter. Voltage stayed at 14 volts the whole hour ride home. So the question is should I be replacing the regulator before I get stuck. I also checked to make sure all the wire connections are tight on the Alt.
I lost the reciept so a return is not a option, and a new one is over a $100.
Good news is the Local Parts store has the Regulator for $20, and the Diodes for $6

Id replace the Reg,ever done it before?Piece of cake.
Yes, done a few REG's over the years on GM's. Guess now I have something to do tommorow. Still can't figure out why the cold Temps makes a difference ??? Maybe a cold sodler joint somewhere inside the Reg ?
If you have an '84, you might be interested in a write up I did in the tech section, here, on upgrading to a newer CS alternator. I rebuilt my 17SI, like yours, in my '85 quite a few times before I found out about this upgrade.
Thanks for all the posts , I checked the belt and it was good.
I'm gonna change the reg out w/a new one, and prob wait to do the CS144 conversion if the new reg works. A new reg is only 10% the cost of the CS conversion.
