I just got a quote from a local GM dealer for $130 to change the lube They say the oil is $65 is that right? Anyone got links to cheaper oil and additive?
The dealer will steal your money. Lift the car, pump the oil and add gear oil in it.
Oil pump ($10)
Differencial additve for limited slip
2 qt of rear axle oil
teflon for differential plug
refer to the owners manual
You will pay max : $35~$50
Get teflon from Joe the Plummer (neighbor)
FWIW, I use Red Line 75W90, it has the limited slip additive included (ie you don't have to add it separately). Total cost for 2qts is ~$20 including tax.

That's what I do as well. I'm still using a pipe wrench on the plug.
The stock gear oil is a 80W-90 GL-5 rated fluid and not a synthetic. Add two bottles of the GM Posi additive. Gear should run $4-5 per quart and about $7 for a bottle of the additive.
Get one of the cheap transfer pumps from Harbor Freight and suck the oil out from the fill hole. Clean the pump and use it to put the fresh gear oil in. Takes about 2 quarts. Don't use teflon on the filler plug. The plug is steel and the housing is aluminum. Just use a good anti-seize on the plug threads.
I have become a REAL fan of the BG differential additive for posi and limited slip. It is a synthetic replacement for whale oil. The stuff really does make a difference(unlike 95% of additives).
64% in the poll use synth what does that say. Looking at Bob is the oil guy the synth does not flow very well Geeze I would like to get the best. 28% use GM and almost as many use Royal Purple of course those are C5 guys but is there a difference?
More info
Richmond Gears says to use Synth in their rebuilds
101 Corvette projects say to use Synth too.
Dam you Bob the oil guy why do I have to look at your stuff. It always makes me paranoid.
I love Bob the oil guy, it tottally confuses me too.
Ask LPE, what do they use?
My Mobil 1 I used the GM additive as it made noises turning left and right. Mine was built by IKERDS all three times ( two broken D36's, and now my D44 with no leaks and AMSOIL)
Mobil Leaked 3 times.
I think TOM PIPER wrote about it a while ago.
Do it yourself. Its a $25.00 job and 20 minutes. I used a pipe wrench to losen the plug. Pumping out the old and pumping in the new, got some in my hair, thats a lousy condictioner.

I believe so. I believe it enough that this is what I run. I've heard you do not need the additive with this. But I put in a bottle anyway. Apparently you only need enough additive to quiet the diff, so if it isn't making noise you don't need it.

Where have you found this specific warning about running synthetic oil in the diff? What engineers told you this?

I'd like to see this also. While these cars may have came from the factory with conventional gear oil, I don't recall ever seeing anything that said not to use it.
