My 88 won't start. I turn the key on and everything has power, but yet when I turn the key, nothing. I thought it was the vats system so I put in a bypass and still nothing anyone got an idea ?
A. neutral safety switch (auto), clutch switch (manual)
B. starter solinoid
C. battery or cables (just got burned by a shorting battery last month)
D. make sure the security light goes off.
Unplug the clutch safety switch (gear selector sw if auto at the base of the gear shift) and jump the socket. Measure the voltage on the jumper when you hit crank position. It should be 12v. If you have 12v and no cranking, then you have a defective starter solenoid or starter motor. You can jump 12v to the jumper and the starter should crank.
If no 12v, then either your bypass isn't working or the contacts in the start enable relay are not making connection due to bad contacts or a bad relay.
Pull the cover over drivers feet and find the two wires from above the steering column that go to a 2 pin plug and unplug. Measure the resistance of your pellet and buy that value resistance in a 1/4 or 1/2 watt resistor from Radio Shack (resistance value must be within 4% of its assigned value) and connect it across the socket in the wiring harness (this goes to the VATS module). Be aware that if you bypass VATS, your car is a candidate for an easy steal. 99% of thefts are done by bashing the column and jumping the ign sw. I know someone whose new Corvette's VATS prevented a theft.
