So its time replace my starter on my 96
Need and idea of what Im in for.Has anyone done this swap or
repair..It's my selonoid thats going out, can I replace it without
replacing the whole starter.I know you could back in the ol days..
Thanks for any help !!!
On my 86' I am using a 1988 starter (the first year of the factory ministarter) to clear the long tube headers on the car.
I replaced the starter less than a week ago, and total time to drive the car on ramps and pull the starter was less than 40 minutes. My starter has 2 wires and 2 bolts holding it in. Replacement time was a little less. I was sick at the time (head cold).
I do not know if the LT-1's make it more difficult.
I believe it is possible to replace just the solenoid, but I have never done that myself.
Having problems with starter last summer, took it off and took it to a repair shop, he tested it and replaced the solenoid, cost approx. $50.00. Not a big job to replace it, however I have the use of a hoist which makes everything easier.
It's two bolts and a couple of wires, not a big deal. Disconnect the battery after you get the car up in the air and supported safely.
You'll also want to make sure the car is cold as you will be reaching up around the passenger side cat.
