Many of us L-98, LT-1 and LT-4 owners are in the habit of "priming" a new oil filter for use by pouring a little bit of fresh oil into it before installing. It's easy on engine's like ours with bottom-mounted filters.
However, the LT-5 in the ZR-1 features a top-mounted oil filter. I am wondering if it's possible to prime an oil filter with this type of configuration in a similar manner?
I "wick" my filter, but do not fill it with oil before installing it. Now, when it comes time to remove the filter, none will leak out upon removal until the filter is inverted, after that it will drain out.

  could you re-explain that? I don't understand. Are you saying the filter is mounted on the top of the LT5 block pointed downwards?

Yup its' mounted on the top of the block pointing downwards.

Look in the lower left hand center corner of this pic, you'll see the black filter.
man.. that's the best picture you could come up with!   That oil filter in your picture looks like a black head or something! :U

IOW, what you're saying is gravity causes whatever oil that's pressurized inside the filter to ebb back into the crankcase after you shut the LT-5 engine off.
And, after you "wick" your replacement filter, you experience a little fresh oil run-off as you invert the filter to screw it on. I guess a shop towel is all you need to manage this spillage, right? :yesnod:

Since it's top-mounted, it probably doesn't 'sump' oil, so it wouldn't matter much whether it was primed or not. The only reason to fill them on other engines is to avoid the few seconds of running dry while the oil pump fills the filter.
Only some of the filters have the check valve but not all. The AC Delco filter does not have a check valve. I use the WIX filter, which they also make the NAPA filter which is the same filter, and they do have the check valve. On the LT-5 engines after draining the 9 quarts of oil you still have about 2 quarts left in the crankcase in which some of us don’t need to prime the filter. Priming the filter makes a mess on the engine in which you can stain the finish of the engine.
