Default Targa top

Can anybody tell me the size of the bolts that retain the top to the windshield frame? They are I think captive bolts in the pad that the roof bolts to. It also I think provides the mount for the sunvisors. Both of these are stripped and will more than likely have to have the heads drilled off. I don't want to go much larger than the major diameter of the bolt since that part is NLA from the General. Haven't found it online anywhere yet either.

Have you tried speaking with one of the Tech's at Ecklers?

They work closely with a company that refurbishes these tops. They might be able to get the info you need as well as replacement parts...

Dave,

Still ridin' those CBX's?

I can check tonight. I have a few brackets around from various tops (both mid and late 89-96 styles), and also a set of mid style (88) brackets that bolt to the windshield header. This bracket is what holds the captive bolts and sunvisor mount. I'll check to see if its possible to remove these brackets with the top still in place.

I take it that the top is still on the car and the torx bolts are stripped preventing removal.

The bolts are M8x1.25. I need to dig for the brackets to determine if they could be removed with the top mounted.

Here's a picture of the bracket:

If you can remove the sunvisors and get the trim panel off, you should be able to unbolt the bracket from the car and remove the top with the brackets still attached. You may need to sacrifice the trim panel if you can't get the sunvisors off first.

As an alternative you could unbolt the small bracket from the top through the large holes in the bracket shown in the photo. You would still need to get the trim panel off, or at least drill a couple of holes for access to the bolts that attach the small bracket to the top (which would be above the bracket shown).

Note: the bracket I have shown is from an 88, so don't use this as a reference for the relative bolt locations for the small top bracket. The 89-96 brackets have different spacing.

yep, up to 9 of 'em now. 4 79s, an 80 an 81 and 3 82s. And a new love, an 03 Kawasaki ZRX 1200. Man, motorcycles sure came a long way in 20 or so years. Published 1/4 mile times for the Greenie are 10.7sec @ 127 mph. More than enough to pucker my shorts. With a pipe and a jet kit it makes 124 HP at the rear wheel. Brakes beyond belief, ventilated rotors, dual 6 piston calipers up front. Two fingers on the lever and you've got a tire talking to you. it even handles. Water cooled, regular fuel, 40 mpg, and all that for $7800 list when it was new. Pretty hard to beat. So here I am wrenching on the old lady's Vette when I could be riding.......... Nothing big, just nickel dime stuff, if anything on one of these beasts could be nickel dime. Pass door power window switch shot, no back up lights. Dead power antenna, Bose system with shot amplifiers. Stripped roof screws. Fixed a thumping headlight and replaced the clutch slave cylinder.... But, it's 14 years old, so it's tinker time.

Looks like we're damn near neighbors. I'm in Oxford now. When there's no snow on the ground that is. I winter in the sunshine state.

Those pics clear up a bunch. Looks like I've got something to do Saturday. I've got some of the brackets with the captive bolt located on Ebay, and I found some of the other ones that bolt to the windshield header for the late model (short span between the bolt holes) some place on the net a couple of days ago but can't remember where. Not Eckler's, not Ebay. Damn! Damn! Damn!

Default Targa top brackets.

Do you guys have a dummy of the month hat? I sure ought to be the idiot wearing it. Got some free time today so I started on the top to see if I could get the brackets off. Long story short.....nothing wrong!!!! Didn't unscrew them far enough when I tried to remove the top the first time. There was a little bind on the bolts and it didn't feel like they were coming out. Everything is like new.

Am I a candidate to get my tool box welded shut???
