Hello folks my name is Dave, Im a mechanic, I would like some advice from someone that owns/owned a C-4, im not sure where to post this but, here it goes. Im a traveling mechanic, I dont own a vette, maybe one day, but heres my question, did the 85 not come with an ashtray? I have a customer that wants to remove his ignition switch (key side), completely, and make it so he doesnt need keys at all to run it, he also wants me to install a kill switch for the fuel system, which is no problem, but I really wanted to put it under the ashtray, he says it dont have one, so my request is, do any of you good gentalmen have pics of the center counsel, I would like to see what I will be working with this Saturday, thank you in advance
The ashtray (s) go in the two round holes under the flap to the right of the shifter. They are little (about 1' deep with a flat side that just drops into the holes).
can the cup holders be taken out with any kind ease? See I want to hide the switch but not in a place that anyone might think to look if they were trying to steal this car.
The cupholders are pretty much molded into the center console piece. I suppose you might be able to put it under the cupholder ashtray insert, but then it would be useless for holding drinks. Whether that matters or not I dunno...
Another concealed option is to put it under the center console storage lid. Pretty hidden. Also, hiding it completely isn't necessarily necessary imho. What are the chances a thief will think a random button is a starter? I did this mod in my old car, and all I did was wire up a complete kill switch to a VERY hidden location. If I was parking it for a while, or in a bad part of town, I would flip that switch so that nothing worked.

Well, the man has a master kill switch, hes just looking for the extra "insurance", and i very possibly might use your suggestion in the fuel cut off switch, by placing under the center counsel, I am hoping I can talk him into, getting a remote starting system, that way he would not need keys (thats the mans goal), and no one but him could drive this vehice. On a side note, I do understand wanting your car to be yours and yours alone, I really dont want to "hack" this guys car up, its a beautiful vette, but the money is good.
Well I did the custom work the man asked for, heres what I did, removed the key side of the switch, wired in a new tack, wired in new temp and oil pressure guages, so the following pics are the work I did for him, with out the center bezel pics (my camera died) but im sure that at some point and time he will post them (as he is a member of this site) unknown to me until today, now you might think that without key that this car is going to be easly stolen, believe me with the redundant systems that he had me install, no-one can steal it without a tow truck, and I bet you would get a shot to the head if you tried. but heres the pics fella's...
If you live in the cincinatti area, I can guarentee, that this is one man that will tell you, I do professional work, from this gentalman, I asked $140.00 to do what he asked, and yet he still gave me a $60.00 dollor tip.
It was a pleasure to meet you sir, and it was all mine, when your ready for me to repair your daughters car, let me know? to replace the clutch is going to cost you 300.00 in labor. If anyone here needs to have their corvette fixed or any other car that you might have, call me, or even if you want the advice of a life long mechanic, my number is 1-513-834-1529. thank you Dave!
