I was able to fix mine by making tool in our machine shop. I turned two disks with curved interior surfaces that matched the curvature of the barrel that is crimped over the ***** at each end. Each disk was cut in half and the two disk halves were connected with threaded rods to set the distance between them. The diameters of the disks were a bit smaller than the barrel ends. The tool was assembled around the barrel, then I used an arbor press to squeeze the barrel ends. I rotated the barrel 90 degrees, then squeezed again.
This method worked pretty well, although I had to touch up the black paint at the ends of the barrel where it was scratched by my die. The only other alternative I've seen is to buy a new one.
I had to adjust my mirror after every bump that I hit. It wound up being the screw that attached the mirror bracket to the car was loose. You might check that first.
If you can't tighten your mirror and need to replace it look in the for sale section, for someone parting out their car and pick up a used one. Good luck and I hope it's a easy fix. Ray glad to have you on the forum.
on my 85 i said F*** it and took the stock one off, and then got a cheap one from autozone and glued it to the windshield, noone ever noticed, cost me 15 dollars and could see out the back just fine
