Default Is $600 too much?

I want to convert my 88s mass air wiring harness over to a 90-91 style speed density style harness and they told me 3 weeks and $600 Maybe I should just look for a harness on the parts board. Don't that seem like alot of money to do the conversion or is that the going rate? Pipe

Is this just a new plug in harness your talking about? Does this include any ajustments that may be made in the ECM to make it work? 89 is MAF. 88 may be also.

I have never did this job, nor do I know how much the parts bill will be. I think I could probably do all that in a day. JMO.....................

Sounds a little expensive. Are all parts new? Everything included? Nothing is wrong with second hand parts as long as they are in good working condition.

Josh, There are always guys on here parting out cars, look for one of them. Besides, how different could it be. I'll lend you my electrical FSM if you want. Just let me know.

How come you want to change the stock setup?

My thought exactly. There are advantages to SD if you are into extracting the last bit of power from a mod but the MAF set up will allow you to do many changes without tampering with your tune.

Maybe I'm just being ignorant here, but I'd like to think I know a lot about engines and sensors/tuning, and isn't a MAF setup more accurate than SD? SD measures pressure and calculates mass flow rate of air into the engine, whereas MAF directly measures the mass airflow rate with no assumptions. Is there something I'm missing?

For the $600 it's only a harness rework not a new one nor do any parts come with it. I want the harness for my racer. THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLY'S Pipe

You can buy a brand new Painless wiring harness for less than $500 just FYI.

You should be able to easily repin the ecu connector to convert from a 165 ecm to a 730 ecm for about $30, including the price of a used 730 ecm.

An SD memcal will cost a few bucks though, maybe 100-$150.

Yeah, $600 is a bit high, just for the harness/ecu re-pin work.

730 ecm $30
repin do it yourself for free
memcal $150
MAP sensor $50
tuning costs $150

I am curious why you want to go SD? More can be done with a MAF system than you may be aware of.

With some special tuning and hardware, I'd say it can be made to work up to about 750 rwhp.

Also for a poor man's SD solution, you could always run Holden 808 $5D code with your present 165 MAF ecm. Just need to re-pin for the MAP sensor. Only costs would be for the MAP sensor and tuning.

Any plans for forced induction?

The Guy who I bought the car from started to do some re pin work ans changed the ECM I gotta check the number on it. He has the wires to the ECM connectors all labeled but they are faded and I can't read them and i'm not very good at wiring (never was) I'm not sure if the mass air connector is still on the harness. The ECM # 7730 The other guy who had the car before me said he couldn't get it running right maybe because of a bad tune. I got a killer 383 going in the car and it will be used mostly for the strip but some street use. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP GUY'SPipe
