85 vette, have a brand new batt. started fine for a week. now I have to jump start with another car. its like something is killing the batt. but the gauges say the batt has like 13 volts. car will turn over for a sec or two then batt is dead or something. just wondering if there is sum kinda module that is faulty or something else thats usualy goes bad. any input would be helpful thanks
First remove the battery cables, neg first and clean the cable lugs, bolts and battery posts and replace the cables, neg last. Measure the battery voltage across the battery posts while someone cranks the engine. Battery voltage must not fall below 9.0 volts or the battery is discharged, or at the end of its life. Battery charge can be told by measuring the battery terminal voltage under no load. 12.0 volts and below, discharged, charge the battery up with a battery charger. 12.9 volts and higher, fully charged. You can measure the battery leakage current by connecting an ammeter from the battery post to the removed negative battery cable. Pull the courtesy light fuse and let the hood down to turn off the underhood lights. GM says leakage current should not exceed 50 milliamps. My 87 draws 27 ma. and I have no problems. If high leakage, pull the fuses one at a time and watch the ammeter to find the circuit. Don't leave your keys in the ignition because this keeps the antitheft circuit on. Remove the nut on the jump start terminal behind the battery and remove the 8 wires one at a time while watching the ammeter. Do you have a CB, radar detector, GPS, aftermarket alarm or audio amp? Check em. At night look for underhood lights, vanity mirror lights, door map lights, center console lights.
I have an aftermarket cd player that u can turn on and off , with out the key in the ignition, that could be a problem, somebody wired it up wrong. and my security light stays on.
